James Alexander Konouck, 73, a native Washingtonian who retired in 1998 as manager of contract research at Newport News
Shipbuilding, died July 6 in a car accident in Newport News, where he lived.
Mr. Konouck stopped at a red light at an intersection and then pulled his van into the intersection, according to police quoted in
the Daily Press newspaper in Newport News. The van then was struck by a school bus, most likely instantly killing Mr. Konouck,
police said.
Mr. Konouck was a 1950 graduate of St. John's College High School in Washington and a 1954 history graduate of
Georgetown University.
After brief service in the Army, he did contract negotiation work for the Navy Department's Bureau of Ships. He moved to Newport
News in 1966.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Barbara Curtiss Konouck of Newport News; five sons, Denis J. Konouck of Decatur, Ga.,
Laurence J. Konouck of Vienna and Kevin A. Konouck, Brendan C. Konouck and Terence J. Konouck, all of Newport News; a
sister; and five grandchildren.
