Burton Kevin Shields

Burton Kevin Shields, 74, a U.S. Department of Agriculture photographer,
audio-visual producer and speechwriter, died of lung cancer Feb. 22 at the
Montgomery Hospice Casey House in Rockville.

Mr. Shields worked for the USDA for 29 years and was an information specialist
when he retired in 1994.

A native Washingtonian, he was a child actor who frequently performed in plays at
Catholic University. After his 1954 graduation from
St. John's College High
School,
he worked with his brothers as a freelance photographer for two years,
then served as a "jumping medic" in the Army's 81st Airborne Division.

He joined the USDA in 1965.

In retirement, Mr. Shields volunteered at addiction treatment programs, where he
was a mentor. He enjoyed playing the piano, fishing and bowling.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Louise Shields of Olney; three daughters,
Maureen Shields Lorenzetti of Bethesda, Christine Shields of Boulder, Colo., and
Felicia Shields Lightfoot of Columbia; a brother, William Shields of Greenbelt;
three sisters, Mary Rose Whelan of Mill Valley, Calif., Claire Sanford of Silver
Spring and Kathryn Behe of College Park; and four grandchildren.
