      Robert N. Hampton Jr., 68, a retired Navy chief warrant officer who later
became a telecommunications specialist for the Defense Department and
Agriculture Department, died Dec. 10 at a cancer treatment hospital in Hershey,
Pa. He had lymphatic cancer, his sister Marcia Lloyd said.


      Robert Nathaniel Hampton Jr. was born in Washington and was a 1961
graduate of
Roosevelt High School. He joined the Navy Reserve in high school
and went on active duty after graduation.

      During the Vietnam War, he was severely wounded when his PT boat
exploded. He spent eight months recovering at Bethesda Naval Medical Center.
While serving in the Navy, he graduated from the University of Maryland. He
retired after 20 years of military service.

      He later spent about 10 years working in telecommunications and satellite
design for the Defense Department. In more recent years, he held a similar job
with the Agriculture Department.

      After moving from Fort Washington to Mechanicsburg, Pa., in 2007, Dr.
Hampton received a doctorate in telecommunications and satellite design from
the University of Virginia.

      His marriage to the former Riyoko Ishii ended in divorce.

      Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Lolita Arquero Hampton of
Mechanicsburg; three children from his first marriage, Desiree Burjakowsky of
Irvine, Calif., Rosita Hampton of Phoenix and Michael Hampton of Ventura,
Calif.; two children from his second marriage, Denise Hampton of Philadelphia
and Timothy Hampton of Mechanicsburg; a son from another relationship, Brian
Hampton of Philadelphia; his mother, Elma Hampton Mullins of Landover; three
sisters, Marvena Suberbey of Warrensville, Ohio, and Marcia Lloyd and Cynthia
Hughley, both of Land­over; and eight grandchildren.
