Phyllis W. Johnson, 88, a native Washingtonian who was a member of the Clarendon United Methodist Church in Arlington County for more
than 50 years, died of cardiac arrest Jan. 9 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. She was an Arlington resident.
Mrs. Johnson's other memberships included the National Genealogical Society, where she served a term as president.
Phyllis Ellen Walker, who was born in the District, was a 1939 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School. She graduated from the
old Wilson Teachers College in Washington in 1943 and began teaching in several District public schools. During the 1950s and 1960s, she
was a secretary for a local Beverage and Brewery Drivers union.
Her marriage to Earl Alexander ended in divorce.
Her second husband, Hugh Bailey Johnson, died in 1992 after 24 years of marriage. A stepson, Hugh Bailey Johnson Jr., died in 1996.
Survivors include two daughters from her first marriage, Maureen Van Bourgondien of Falls Church and Kathy Bain of Lexington, Ky.; two
stepsons, Tony Johnson of Fairfax County and David Johnson of Tupper Lake, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and eight
great-great-grandchildren.
