Helen Stevens Hayes Smith

Helen Hayes Smith, 86, co-owner of the now-closed Stevens Tile and Marble Co., died of cancer Sept. 4 at her home in Potomac.
Mrs. Smith began working at the Potomac-based company, started by her father in 1904, after she graduated from Goucher College in the
mid-1940s. She took over its operation, along with her sister and nephew, after her father's death. The business closed in 1992.

Helen Stevens was a native Washingtonian and graduated from
Roosevelt High School in the District
.
She was a longtime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kensington and later joined Potomac United Methodist Church. She
was a lifetime member of Congressional Country Club and enjoyed golfing and world travel.

Her first husband, Wilford E. Hayes, died in 1977. Her second husband, Floyd Lee Smith, died in 1987.

Survivors include her third husband, Dr. T. Phillip Waalkes of Fredericksburg; three children from her first marriage, Jeffery R. Hayes of
Whitefish Bay, Wis., Valerie Hayes Williams of Englewood, Colo., and Lance E. Hayes of Annapolis; six grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
