Eileen Hager MacNeil, 82, of Roanoke and
Fairfax, Va. passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011,
after a courageous battle with cancer.
Eileen was born January 30, 1929 in Queens, N.Y.
to the late William Martin and Florence Kopp Hager.
She graduated from Roosevelt High School and George
Washington University in Washington, D.C. While
attending George Washington, Eileen worked for Southern Railway (now
Norfolk Southern) and met the love of her life and husband of 59 years, Joseph
Hector MacNeil.
Eileen also worked for Tri-County Realty and the Fairfax County School
System in Fairfax, Va. before retiring with her husband to Roanoke, Va. In
addition to her husband, Eileen is survived by her two sons, Joseph H. MacNeil,
Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Greensboro, N.C., William A. MacNeil and his wife,
Anita ,of Charlotte, N.C.; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Florence Essers, of Baltimore, Md.
Eileen was known for her outgoing personality, generous nature, quick-wit, and
tireless devotion to family and friends.
She enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, traveling, and watching her
favorite sports teams with her family and friends.
Funeral services for Eileen will be held at 12 noon Wednesday, February 16,
2011, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, 631 N. Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Va.,
with Father Jim Parke officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday,
February, 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Funeral Home, 6732 Peters Creek
Rd., Roanoke.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the
American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
