     Edward P. Van Hise Jr., 91, who worked for more than four decades for
Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., died Oct. 8 at Holy Cross Hospital in
Silver Spring. He had acute myeloid leukemia and complications from
pneumonia, his daughter Patricia Van Hise said.

     Mr. Van Hise began his career in the company’s engineering department and
retired in 1985 from the Silver Spring office as manager of public relations. His
responsibilities included dealing with problems associated with power outages.

     Edward Preston Van Hise Jr., a Washington native, graduated from
Roosevelt High School in 1938. He joined the Navy during World War II,
served in the Pacific as a fighter pilot and retired from the Navy Reserve in
1968. He was interviewed by the Library of Congress for the Veterans History
Project.
Mr. Van Hise was a longtime volunteer at Holy Cross Hospital. He helped raise
funds for its establishment in 1963 and served on its board of trustees from 1976
to 1984.

      Using his expertise in telephones, he installed life-line alert systems
connecting the homes of senior citizens with Holy Cross Hospital and Suburban
Hospital in Bethesda. He continued this volunteer service until about two years
ago.

     Mr. Van Hise was a former president of the Rotary Club in the Wheaton-
Kensington area, which he joined in the 1970s.

     His wife, Betty Lou Twidwell Van Hise, died in 2004 after 58 years of
marriage.

     Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Van Hise of Frederick and Karen
Van Hise of Silver Spring; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
