Doris C. Simmons, 92, who served as secretary to the U.S. Army's chief of
chaplains for 11 years, died May 1 of stomach cancer at Inova Alexandria
Hospital. She was a Springfield resident.
Mrs. Simmons retired in 1981 after 30 years of federal service. She previously
worked at the Federal Trade Commission and as secretary to the Army's deputy
chief of chaplains
.
Doris Christopher was born in Jacksonville, Fla., and grew up in Washington.
She graduated from Roosevelt Senior High School in the District.
On the day of her retirement, she announced that she was starting college the
next day. She was the oldest graduate of the class of 1985 at George Mason
University.
Mrs. Simmons was a member of the Ravensworth Baptist Church in Annandale.
She was a former regent of a D.C. chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution and a member of the American Contract Bridge League.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Weldon B. Simmons of Springfield;
a daughter, Gretchen S. Brown of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; a sister, Bettye Burke
Baker of Annandale; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
