
Angelos W. Valis, salesman, grocer
Angelos W. Valis, 83, a food salesman who also ran a wholesale grocery in
the 1960s, died Dec. 18 at the home of one of his sons in Silver Spring.
The cause of death was cardiac arrest, said his son Thomas Valis.
Mr. Valis, a Potomac resident, worked as a salesman for various food
brokers in the Washington area and retired in 1993. In the 1960s, he owned and
operated the grocery P.K. Chaconas and Co., which was first located in the
District and later in Riverdale.
A sports enthusiast, he ran a concession stand at the old Griffith Stadium in
the 1940s and ’50s.
Angelos William Valis was born in the District to Greek immigrants. He
graduated in 1947 from Roosevelt High School, where he was a captain of the
football team. He attended business college in Washington before serving in the
Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Valis was a member of the American Legion and St. Sophia Greek
Orthodox Cathedral in the District.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Doris Boukis Valis of Potomac;
three sons, William Valis of Silver Spring, Thomas Valis of North Potomac and
Kenneth Valis of Gaithersburg; a sister, Ann Andrias of Bethesda; a brother,
Louis Valis of Rockville; and four grandchildren.
