Alvin Silber

Alvin Silber, 76, the retired proprietor of Alvin's Attic, an antique and used-furniture store in College Park, died Oct. 14 at his home
in Houston of complications of Parkinson's disease. Mr. Silber was born in the District and graduated from  
Roosevelt High
School
. After serving in the Coast Guard, he returned to the District and started a secondhand store.
At the suggestion of his father-in-law, he got into the scrap business, opening Viener Salvage Co. in Northwest Washington.
After the 1968 riots, he opened Alvin's Attic in College Park and, with his family, ran the business until 1997. He worked briefly for
PG Scrap, also in College Park, before retiring to Houston in 2002.
Mr. Silber was a member of Samuel Gompers Lodge in the District and often donated his services to charitable causes.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Esther Silber of Houston; four children, David Silber of Potomac, Ronnie Silber of Laurel,
Lewis Silber of Clarksburg and Eva Silber of Houston; and 10 grandchildren.
