Dr. LEON A. MARTEL A lifelong resident of the
Washington area, who practiced obstetrics and gynecology
in Northern Virginia from 1953 to 1994 died peacefully on
November 17, 2010 at the age of 87. His wife and five
children were by his side.

Dr. Martel was born in Washington, DC and lived for most of his life in
McLean, Virginia. He graduated from
Gonzaga High School in 1941, from
Georgetown University in 1943 and from Georgetown Medical School in
1947. He completed his residency at Georgetown University Hospital in 1951.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a Flight Surgeon
and Chief of the Obstetrical and Gynecology Department at Hunter Air Force
Base Hospital in Savannah, Georgia from 1951 to 1953. Dr. Martel practiced
obstetrics and gynecology in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia for over
40 years. Along with his practice, Dr. Martel was a Clinical Instructor of
Obstetrics and Gynecology at Georgetown Medical School in 1953. He
became Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George
Washington Medical School prior to his retirement in 1994. He was then
placed on the Honorary Staff at Fairfax Hospital.

Dr. Martel was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American
College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Southern Medical Association, the
Georgetown Clinical Society and Fairfax Medical Society.

He was a member of the Washington Golf and County Club in Arlington, VA
and the Martin Downs Country Club in Palm City, Florida. He was also a
parishioner at St. John's Catholic Church in McLean, VA. He enjoyed golf,
bridge, photography, boating and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen Martel; his five children, Charles
Martel of McLean, Virginia, Dr. Thomas Martel of Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina, Robert Martel of McLean, Virginia, Eleanor Gardner of San
Clemente, California and Lisa Martel of Boulder, Colorado; and his five
grandchildren.

Friends may call at Murphy Falls Church Funeral Home, 1102 W. Broad St.,
(Rt. 7), Falls Church, Virginia (703) 533-0341 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on
Monday, November 22, 2010.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. John the Beloved Catholic
Church, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean, Virginia, 10:30 am, on Tuesday,
November 23, 2010.
