Karl Dewitt Mullen, age 78 of Silver Spring, Maryland,
passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 25, 2012.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary Belle
Mullen of Silver Spring, MD; his children Thomas G. Mullen
(Janet) of Damascus, MD; Nanette K. Miller of Washington,
DC; Rita J. Yates (Edward) of Walkersville, MD; and
Ann P. Wiegand (David) of Harpers Ferry, WV,
grandchildren Gregory (Molly) Mullen of Baltimore, MD; Corey (Brittany)
Yates of Brunswick, MD; Sarah Mullen of Damascus, MD; and Amanda Yates
of Walkersville, MD; and great grandchildren Christopher and Carson. In
addition he leaves his sisters Ida Barrett, Connie Hardin and Sue Fleming and
brother Charles (Fred) Mullen. He was preceded in death by his brother J.
Michael Mullen.
Karl was born in Washington, DC and lived in the surrounding area his
entire life. He graduated in 1951 from Gonzaga College High School and
received an accounting degree from Benjamin Franklin School of Accountancy
– now George Washington University. He served in the US Army from 1953
to 1955. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1958. He attended
American University School of Government and Public Administration from
1956 to 1964.
Karl was a partner in a CPA practice from 1955 to 1963. In 1963 he
joined Rental Tools and Equipment Company International, Inc., where he
served as an officer and director of many organizations including the
Associated Equipment Distributors and the American Rental Association until
1982. From 1982 until his retirement in 1995 he was Vice President of
Finance at DynCorp/Viar, Inc. of Alexandria, VA - now CSC. Karl also served
as an officer and director of the Centers for the Handicapped of Maryland from
1970-1978.
Interment was held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Tuesday, January 31,
2012.
