On Monday, August 8, 2011 after battling a long
illness, Joseph G. Tippett of Hollywood, MD, surrounded
by loving family and friends, lost his battle. Born in Washington, DC on June
27, 1925 to George Tabor Tippett and Rosalee V. Sweeny Tippett, he was the
eldest of nine children.
Joe graduated from Gonzaga High School and immediately enlisted in the
U.S. Navy and saw action in the North Atlantic in World War II. On December
30, 1944 he married Gloria M. Campbell of Silver Hill, MD. After discharge
from the navy, he was employed by and retired from the Federal Aviation
Agency.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Gloria M. Tippet,
children; Joanne Begg (Glenn), Nancy Murphy, David Tippett (Rhonda),
Donna Lux (John), Stephen Tippett (Tammi), fifteen grandchildren and twenty-
six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by son Joseph G. Tippett, Jr., and his wife Marlene
Lane Tippett in 1978.
A dedicated firefighter, he spent over thirty years as a member of Silver
Hill, MD VFD, and District Heights, MD VFD where he served as Fire Chief.
Joe was an active member of the 4400 club of Gonzaga High School,
Washington, DC, The Knights of Columbus, and an avid sportsman.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 from
5:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown,
MD where prayers will be recited at 7:00PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be
celebrated in St. John’s Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD with Fr. Raymond
Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in the Church cemetery.
