John Richard Barnard, 59, a real estate agent and civic volunteer who previously worked for two local banks, died of prostate
cancer Oct. 4 at his home in Silver Spring.
Mr. Barnard worked on a team that developed automated teller machines at the old Suburban Trust Co. between 1970 and
1980, then went to work at First American Bank for the next eight years, where he became the vice president and director of
data processing. He turned to real estate in 1988, working for IKO Real Estate in Olney and privately investing in real estate as
well.
He was a coach and community volunteer, both through his employers and for his children's sports teams. He became an
official in the Burtonsville Athletic Association, serving as vice president, commissioner of boys and girls leagues and umpire
commissioner. He also ran clinics for umpires and coaches and put together a rules manual.
Mr. Barnard was assistant coach for the junior varsity girls softball team at Springbrook High School since 2001.
He was born in Evansville, Ind., and moved with his family to Silver Spring as a child. He graduated from Gonzaga High School,
then worked as a mail carrier. He served in the Army in Vietnam and was discharged as a sergeant in 1975.
He enjoyed bowling, skiing, singing and songwriting. He enjoyed working on cars and organized the neighborhood's
multifamily yard sales. Among his military awards was an Air Medal.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Barbara Barnard of Silver Spring; two children, Jason Richard Barnard of Rockville and
Rebecca Ann Barnard of Silver Spring; three brothers, Joseph Barnard of Fairfax Station, Tom Barnard of Knoxville, Tenn., and
William Barnard of Olney; and a sister, Mary Barnard of Jessup.
