Francis A. Connolly Jr., Economist

September 16, 1922 - May 29, 2011

    Born in Washington, D. C. on September 16, 1922, economist for the U. S.
Department of State, decorated World War II veteran, recipient of the Purple
Heart, navigator on B-17s in the Army Air Corps, and 3rd generation graduate
of Georgetown University, Francis "Frank" Connolly Jr., passed away on May
29, 2011 in Bethesda, Maryland.

    He was a wiz in English, mathematics, economics, chess, Latin and Greek,
active in civic and business organizations, loved baseball, participated in events
of Men of St. John's College High School, and a recipient of numerous
commendations from the U.S. Department of State.

    From a distinguished District of Columbia family, his younger sister Anne
Connolly Pacious of Cape Cod, MA was the first woman to graduate from
Georgetown University Medical School in Pediatrics. His late brother, John
"Jack" was a well known nightly TV news anchor for NBC/WRC in
Washington, D.C., and member of the National Press Club. His uncle, "Al"
Connolly was a prominent physician in the city. His father, Frank Sr., was a
former news correspondent, and a member of the District Bar. His mother,
Mary Geier Connolly, was a 1917 baccalaureate of Trinity College in
mathematics.

    Oregon survivors are his son, Jon Christenson of Salem; grandchildren,
Lara (and Carl) Zingmark, Eric (and Sara) Christenson; his great grand
daughters, Elizabeth Marie, Evelyne Alexandra and Lily Kathryn, all of
Portland; and grand daughter, Anna Lisabeth Christenson, currently attending
the CHA Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

    Other survivors include his older sister, Mary Frances "Mickie" Murray
(Trinity '41); Sharon Lee Christenson; a grandson, David Lee Christenson and
grand daughter, Donna Lynn Christenson, all of Virginia. His oldest son,
William L. Christenson, of Culpeper County, Virginia, passed away in
December 2006.

    A kind gentle confident man, Mr. Connolly was a father to 9 children,
grandfather to 15, and great grandfather. Scores of nieces and nephews also
survive.

    A Mass of Christian Burial was held on June 3 followed by internment with
military honors. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions are being made to
Gonzaga College High School, Washington, D. C.
