E. Thomas Kernan, 82, a golf professional at Washington area courses who was manager of Konterra Driving Range in Beltsville from
1996 to 2006, died Sept. 25 at his home in the Howard County community of Dayton. He had congestive heart failure. Before working at
Konterra, Mr. Kernan spent seven seasons as starter and matchmaker at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase. Among many other
jobs, he also had been head golf professional at the Font Hill course in Ellicott City and assistant pro at Manor Country Club in Rockville.
Eugene Thomas Kernan was born in Baltimore and raised in Washington, where he attended Gonzaga College High School. He was an
Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.
His wife, Dorothy Walker Kernan, whom he married in 1948, died in 1986. Two of their daughters died, Mary Angela Kernan in infancy in
1955 and Stephanie Fernandez in 2005.
Survivors include his companion of more than 40 years, Rosalie Mouldon of Dayton; three sons from his marriage, Patrick Kernan of
Coppell, Tex., James Kernan of Washington and Kevin Kernan of Silver Spring; two stepdaughters, Rebecca Miles of Fulton, and Judy
Gonzales of Baltimore; two brothers, Charles Kernan of Great Falls and Joseph Kernan of Martinsville, Va.; two sisters, Frances Barnhard
of Dagsboro, Del., and Mary Renee Hummel of Canton, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
