RACHAEL DOWLING MARLEY
Rachael Dowling Marley, 100, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Forsyth
Medical Center. She was born January 3, 1917 in Ozark, AL to the late James Roscoe
and Francis Wilson Dowling.
She lived in Florida, New Mexico, Alabama, Washington, and Virginia. She graduated
from Eastern High School in Washington, DC in 1935 and attended the School for
Secretaries Business College.
While in Washington, DC she met her husband, Jake Marley and then went to work for
the Press Club, where she worked on press releases for the White House and the
Department of Agriculture before retiring in 1980 with 20 years of service. She
volunteered at a hospital as a Pink Lady and was active in the Methodist church. Mrs.
Marley was a member of the Women's Junior League and Daughters of the
Confederacy. She was also a member of the Sleepy Hollow Community in Falls Church,
VA, joined her neighborhood patrol, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, an exercise
instructor for the senior citizens, and was an avid Crimson Tide fan throughout her life.
Rachael loved gardening, dancing, and working with people.
In 1971, she became a widow. She and Miriam were extremely close. Rachael moved
from Falls Church, VA to Winston-Salem in 2004 and lived independently until 2013.
Miriam had a home built with handicapped facilities in case she needed to care for her
mother in her remaining years.
Surviving are a daughter, Miriam Marley; two nieces, Jackie Roberts of Warner
Robbins, GA and Daphine Murphy of Mobile, AL; two nephews, Paul Roberts of Warner
Robbins, GA and Dick Murphy of Mobile, AL; cousin, Jeanette O'Donnell of Columbia,
MD. She will also be missed by her furry baby, "Winnie Marley" of Lewisville, NC; five
furry grand-cats and many friends from Texas, Alabama, California, Arizona, Virginia,
Tennessee, Georgia and Delaware.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller
Lewisville Chapel with Pastor Alan Malchuk officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service. After the visitation, friends are
welcome to the Marley home in Lewisville for a time of refreshments.
An entombment service will be held in Falls Church, VA at the National Memorial Park.
