Margaret Helen Ashby Holleman

Margaret Helen Ashby Vickers-Holleman 2006

M. Helen Vickers Holleman, 81, a former city clerk and clerk of council for Alexandria,
died of pancreatic cancer Sept. 8 at Manor Care in Alexandria.

She was born Margaret Helen Ashby in the District and graduated from
Eastern High
School in 1943.

While her husband was in the service during World War II, she worked in the U.S. Office
of Censorship. When he returned, she helped him with the bookkeeping for his chain of
local short-order restaurants, called Tiny Nooks.

An Alexandria resident for most of her life, she was a homemaker for several years.
She took a job as a secretary at Alexandria City Hall in 1962 and was promoted to city
clerk and clerk of council in 1965. She retired in 1970.

Mrs. Holleman received the Jaycees Outstanding City Employee Award in 1974 and the
1984 Public Service Award, presented by the Alexandria Port Packet newspaper for
service to the city's residents. She was a member of Del Ray Baptist Church.

Her first husband, James Vickers, died in 1973. Her second husband, Joseph
Holleman, died in 1992.

Survivors include two sons from her first marriage, James Vickers and Ronald Vickers,
both of Alexandria; two sisters; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
