Joseph Hector MacNeil September 18, 1925 - May 3, 2015
Joseph Hector MacNeil, “Joe” 89, of Roanoke and Fairfax, VA, passed away Sunday,
May 3, 2015 at his home.
Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Eileen and is survived by
two sons, Joseph H. MacNeil, Jr. and his wife Cindy of Greensboro, NC, and William
A. MacNeil and his wife Anita of Charlotte, NC. He also leaves behind many loving
nieces and nephews as well as numerous extended family members and friends, all
whose lives he touched.
Joe was born in Washington, D.C., graduating from Eastern High School (1944) and
George Washington University. While attending George Washington, Joe would meet
and later marry the love of his live, Eileen Hager. Joe worked for Southern Railway
(now Norfolk Southern) in Fairfax, VA, relocating and subsequently retiring in Roanoke
after 37 years with the company and retired as manager of the employee benefits
department.
Prior to attending college, Joe proudly served his country in World War II as a member
of the US Marine Corp and received various medals for valor.
Joe and Eileen loved traveling particularly their cruises to the Pacific Northwest and
the Caribbean. Joe also enjoyed golfing and cheering on his favorite sports teams
including Notre Dame and the Washington Redskins. Besides being a devoted and
loving husband and father, Joe is known for being a true gentleman in every sense of
the word combined with his warm smile and positive attitude that served as an
inspiration to many.
Funeral Services for Joe will be held at noon Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Oakey’s North
Chapel with the Rev. Elmo McLaurin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour
prior to the service. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Cove Road,
Roanoke, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American
Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.
