Hellmuth B. Bernhards "Ham"
Of Dagsboro, DE, formerly of Prince George's County, MD
and Washington, DC, died Wednesday, February 24, 2021
in Alexandria, VA.
Born in Washington DC, Mr. Bernhards was a son of German
immigrants who joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, following
graduation from Eastern High School (1944). He served
active duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After the war, he began his career as an officer for the D.C. Metropolitan Police
Department (MPD). Following his retirement from MPD, he was employed with the
Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
He was married for 67 years to his wife Emily J. Bernhards who passed away in 2019.
He is survived by his three sons, William, Robert, and John Bernhards and their wives;
four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private service for immediate family will be held Saturday, March 6, 2021 in the
Chapel at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA
22314, followed by a service and burial at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD.
