BISHOFF FREDERICK M. BISHOFF On November 2, 2012, surrounded by his loving
family, Frederick M. Bishoff died peacefully at his home in southern Florida. The
youngest of three children, Fred was born near Niagara Falls, New York on May 18,
1917 to Fanny and Alexander Bishoff.
Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Washington D.C., where his father Alexander
Bishoff became a senior attorney in the U.S. Patent Office. Fred attended public
schools in Washington, D.C. graduating from Eastern High School in 1934.
He was especially proud to have been awarded the Allison Nailor Gold Medal for
competitive cadet drill. Fred went on to graduate from the University of Maryland where
he received a degree in Electrical Engineering.
On November 10, 1940, Fred married Florence Raport also a lifelong Washingtonian.
Fred and Florence had a close, devoted, and happy marriage for 42 years.
During the Second World War, Fred served in the U.S. Army in several war theaters,
rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the War, Fred became a civilian employee of the
Army as Director of Safety for the Army Materiel Command. Fred went on to become
the Chief Safety Engineer /Director for OSHA and for the United States Postal Service.
Fred received many citations and awards before retiring from government as a senior
executive in 1965. Fred built a successful safety engineering consulting practice with
clients including NASA, where he worked on Space Shuttle matters.
In 1978, when his beloved wife Florence, began her battle with cancer Fred retired
permanently. He was her constant loving companion, care giver and health advocate
until her death in January 1983.
In June 1984, Fred married Evelyn "Eppie" Bernstein. They split their time between
Washington DC and southern Florida where they enjoyed 27 full, happy and active years
of retirement until her death in December 2011.
Fred is survived by his older brother Theodore "Ted" Bishoff, now 101 years old. Fred's
sister Dorothy and her husband Joe Kipnis, Ted's wife Gladys, and Fred's brother-in-law
Robert Raport, sister-in-law Mimi and her husband Harry Myerson, all preceded Fred in
death.
Fred is survived by his loving daughters Karen Alexander (Paul) and Lynne Raport
Bishoff; his grandson's Lee M. Hindin and Scott A. Kamins (Hilary); his great
grandchildren Bryan J. Hindin, Sydney Florence Hindin, Joshua P. Kamins, and
Benjamin I. Kamins. Fred is also survived by the many loving members of the Raport
and Bishoff families; including Milton and Sunny Raport, and Lloyd and Jeanne Raport.
Fred is also survived by his step-grandchildren Elise Alexander Bhagwhat (Aditya) and
Eric L. Alexander (Cristina) and their children; and by his devoted stepchildren: Stuart A.
Bernstein (Wilma), Richard D. Bernstein, and Mauree Jane Perry (Mark) and his many
step grandchildren, their spouses, and great grandchildren.
Services will be held at King David Memorial Garden in Falls Church Virginia on
November 9 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends and relatives at the home of Scott
and Hilary Kamins in Annandale, Virginia, after services and throughout the afternoon.
