DENNIS E. SOUTHERN
Dennis E. Southern, former director of physical security at Department of Treasury
(1970-1986), died August 13, 2015.
Mr. Southern graduated from Eastern High School Washington, DC (1948) and
from Mount Saint Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Maryland (1954).
He served as a special agent with the U.S. Department of State providing personal
protection for heads of foreign countries prior to his employment with the Department of
Treasury. He represented the Department on the central intelligence security committee
(1971-1981).
He volunteered with Offender Aid and Restoration (Fairfax, Virginia), Special Olympics,
the American Lung Association of Northern Virginia where he was a member of their
board of directors (1990-1992) and, the Northern Virginia Mediation Service.
Mr. Southern is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frieda, their children Denny (Roxanne),
Paul, Michael (Christine), Helen Mayberry (Keith) and nine grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Demaine Funeral Home, 10565 West Main St., Fairfax, VA on
Monday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Mass of the Resurrection at the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 5121 Woodland
Way, Annandale, VA on Tuesday 12:30 p.m.
Interment to follow at the Fairfax Memorial Park.
