William R. Evans, 88, a retired Navy Department machinist supervisor, died of vascular disease May 9 at Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing
Center in Sandy Spring. He lived in Olney.
Mr. Evans worked for the Navy Department from 1939 to 1981 and retired from the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak.
William Richard Evans was born in Washington and graduated from Eastern High School.
He was a former Boy Scouts scoutmaster. He solicited donations of scrap and reusable building materials from which he built a camping lodge for
Scouts near Crownsville. He taught a course in firearms and hunting safety to hundreds of Scouts.
He was a member of the Scottish Rite and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Hazel Brumley Evans of Olney; two sons, Jack W. Evans of the Alexandria area of Fairfax County and Robert
H. Evans of Upper Marlboro; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
