Viola Shipley Burroughs, 98, a certified notary public who worked as an executive secretary for Security Storage Co. in
Washington from 1950 until 1975, died of cardiac arrest June 3 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Silver Spring.
Mrs. Burroughs, who lived in Silver Spring for many years, was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Washington. She graduated from
Eastern High School and attended a business school in the District.
The former East Riverdale and Edgewater resident enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay. In the 1950s, she enjoyed playing
golf at Argyle Country Club in Layhill, where she was a charter member.
Her marriage to her first husband, Ralph S. King, ended in divorce. Her second husband, Harry C. Brown, to whom she had
been married for 11 years, died in 1959. She was married to Robert M. Burroughs for 29 years until his death in 2000.
A daughter from her first marriage, Elsie L. King, died in 2001.
Survivors include two children, also from her first marriage, Carolyn K. Witzel of Silver Spring and Ralph S. King of Annapolis; five
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
