Thomas S. Nutwell Jr., 87, a contracting officer with the Navy Department from 1946 until his retirement in 1980, died
March 24 at his home in Alexandria after a heart attack.

Mr. Nutwell was a part-time high school football referee throughout the Washington area from the 1950s to the early
1980s. Starting in the late 1940s, he worked as an usher at the old Griffith Stadium and was an usher staff manager at
RFK Stadium until 1998.

Thomas Sewell Nutwell, a native Washingtonian, graduated from
Eastern High School in 1940. He was a Navy veteran
of World War II and a Mason.

His wife of 55 years, Mary Beck Nutwell, died in 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Helen N. Winkle of Vienna; and two
grandsons.
