Roy Stanley Eckert

  Roy Stanley Eckert, 85, who retired as an assistant commissioner for the General Services Administration's Contracts Office, died of multi-system failure  Jan. 10 at Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly. He lived in Bowie.
  During his 40-year career with the GSA, Mr. Eckert held several key  positions, including liaison for White House construction and renovation  activities and regional director of the Public Buildings Service. He retired in  1986.
  A Washington native, he graduated from  Eastern High School and was attending the University of Maryland when he enlisted in the Army. He served  under Gen. Douglas MacArthur as a cryptographic technician in the Philippines during World War II.
  He then graduated from the University of Maryland, where he majored in mechanical engineering. Over the years, he was an active member of the university's Terrapin Club and loyally attended football, basketball and  tournament games.
  His marriage to Lucia Eckert ended in divorce.
  Survivors include his wife, Clarissa Eckert of Bowie; a son from his first  marriage, Roy Eckert of Rockville; and three grandsons.
