Meta Madeline Donald, 84, a former secretary with the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Postal Transportation Service, died Nov. 18 of Alzheimer's disease at her home in Annandale.
Mrs. Donald was born in the District and graduated from Eastern High School in 1940. She received an associate's degree from Strayer College in 1942.
She was a secretary for the Interior Department from 1943 to 1945 and the Postal Transportation Service from 1945 to 1956.
After leaving the workforce, she did extensive volunteer work. She was secretary and president of the women's auxiliary of the Railway Mail Association, chairwoman of a scholarship committee of the Fairfax Home Extension Service, chairwoman of the hospitality committee of the spring festival sponsored by the Washington Area Square and Round Dance Association and a volunteer at the Fairfax Museum and Visitors Center. For many years, she was in charge of the Southern Railroad retired postal clerks' reunion at Graves Mountain Lodge.
Mrs. Donald also sang with the Springtonics chapter of Sweet Adelines in Springfield and danced for 25 years with three square-dance and round-dance clubs. She was a longtime member of the Shannondale Club, a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Springfield and a charter member of Faith Chapter 177, Order of the Eastern Star, in Annandale.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Eugene Moffett Donald of Annandale.
