    Max H. Sampson, 74, a lawyer who later became a social worker in
Washington, died Jan. 4 in Guadalajara, Mexico, after a stroke.

    Mr. Sampson had a private law practice in Bethesda for 20 years and
ended his career at the U.S. Department of Education.

    Upon retirement from the government in the early 2000s, Mr.
Sampson served as a social worker in the District. He retired to Mexico in
2008.

    Max Harvey Sampson was born in Sharpsburg, Md., and was a
graduate of
Eastern High School in Washington. He served in the Navy
as a helicopter pilot in the mid-1950s.

    After graduating from the University of Maryland, Mr. Sampson
served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic in the early 1960s.
He later received a master's degree in social psychology from the
University of Maryland. In 1973, he graduated from law school at the
University of Southern California.

    He began his legal career at the Neighborhood Legal Services Program
in the District and later served as prosecutor in Washington.

    His marriage to Joan B. Sampson ended in divorce.

    Survivors include a son, David Sampson of Guadalajara; a sister,
Cathryn Smith of Charles Town, W.Va.; and three brothers, Harry
Sampson of Temple Hills, Marvin Sampson of Hagerstown, Md., and
Mark Sampson of Jarrettsville, Md.
