 Mary E. 'Brownie' Bryson, 96, of Westminster
Mary Elizabeth "Brownie" Brown Bryson, 96, of
Carroll County, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at
Father's Care, her home near Westminster.

 Born March 21, 1915, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late
George Edwin and Elizabeth Bunting Brown. She was the wife of the late
Brady Bryson, whom she met at college and whom she married Nov. 1,
1938, in Vienna.

 She had lived in Cumberland, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Snow
Hill, on the Eastern Shore, with her family. She graduated in 1931 from
Eastern High School in Washington, D.C., and in 1935 from Western
Maryland College, now McDaniel College, where she had been a scholar,
an athlete and the sports editor for the college yearbook.

 She and her husband had lived in New York, N.Y., Philadelphia, Pa.,
and Washington, D.C. After World War II she and her husband purchased
and renovated their farm, Father's Care, near Westminster.

 She was a trustee of the Carroll County Public Library, a director of the
League of Women Voters of Carroll County, and a member of the steering
committee for the formation of a Governor's Council of the Arts for
Carroll County. She was an original member of the Carroll County Human
Relations Committee.

 In the 1960s, she unsuccessfully ran to become a member of the House
of Delegates and then the state Senate. In 1967, she was elected to
represent Carroll County at the Maryland Constitutional Convention. In
1967, she was elected to the Board of Trustees of her college alma mater,
and became a trustee emeritus in 1984. She served on various committees
of the board of trustees and was a staunch supporter of the growth and
expansion of the college. She and her husband established the George E.
Brown Family Memorial Scholarship in honor of her father.

 She and her husband restored a historic building in Westminster and
created and operated Locust Wines and Antiques for more than 20 years
before finally retiring in their 80s.

 Surviving are children and spouses Linda and Thomas Lucatorto, and
John and Nancy Bryson, all of Washington, D.C., and Timothy and
Rosanna Bryson, of Westminster; a daughter-in-law, Anita Bryson; nine
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a
son, David Brady Bryson, who died in 1999.

 The burial service will be private. A memorial service will be held at a
later date. Memorial contributions may be sent to the George Brown
