| Joseph William Widman, 85, a former weapons designer with the Navy Department, died Sept. 22 of respiratory failure at St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown. He lived in Hollywood. |

|
| Mr. Widman was born in Catonsville, Md., and moved with his family to Washington when he was 12. He was a graduate of Eastern High School. |
|
| After two years at the University of Maryland, he joined the Army and served in an engineering battalion in France and Germany during World War II. He later graduated from George Washington University. |
|
|
| He worked for the Navy's old Bureau of Weapons, assisting in the development of the Polaris missile, until his retirement in 1977. |
|
| He lived in Marlow Heights before moving to Hollywood in 1978. |
|
|
| His wife of 47 years, Marguerita "Peggy" Widman, died in 1999. |
|
|
| Survivors include two children, Mary Beth Widman of Temple Hills and Jake Widman of San Francisco; and a grandson. |
