| John Joseph Fernandes, 65, who spent much of his career as a security guard at the Smithsonian Institution before retiring in 2002, died Feb. 22, 2006 at a nursing home in Tarpon Springs, Fla. He had a heart ailment and diabetes. | ||||
| Mr. Fernandes was born in Trinidad and settled in Washington in 1952. He was a graduate of Eastern High School and D.C. Teachers College. He served in the Army from 1957 to 1959. | ||||
| He moved to Trinidad from the District in 2002. | ||||
| Survivors include two sisters, Yasmin Khan of Toronto and Rose Middleton of Tarpon Springs; and a brother, Dr. Francis Fernandes of Silver Spring. | ||||
