John J. Fernandes 
John Joseph Fernandes, 65, who spent much of his career as a security guard at the Smithsonian Institution before retiring in 2002, died Feb. 22, 2006 at a nursing home in Tarpon Springs, Fla. He had a heart ailment and diabetes.
Mr. Fernandes was born in Trinidad and settled in Washington in 1952. He was a graduate of  Eastern High School and D.C. Teachers College. He served in the Army from 1957 to 1959.
He moved to Trinidad from the District in 2002.
Survivors include two sisters, Yasmin Khan of Toronto and Rose Middleton of Tarpon Springs; and a brother, Dr. Francis Fernandes of Silver Spring.
