John Ernest Proud Jr., 87, a retired postal worker and union official, died Sept. 30 at Montgomery Village Health Care Center
after a stroke. He lived with his daughter in Gaithersburg.
Mr. Proud was born in Washington and graduated from Eastern High School. He served in the Army Air Forces in the Pacific
during World War II.
After the war, he worked in Paris for TWA before returning to Washington in 1946. He spent 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service
as a carrier and clerk in West Hyattsville, Adelphi and Langley Park.
He also served as local president, state president and tri-state president of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He
retired in 1976.
Mr. Proud lived in Riverdale for 25 years and was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church there. He retired to Artemas, Pa.,
where he lived from 1976 to 2006. His first marriage, to Grace Reilly Proud, ended in divorce. His second wife, Ann Hallock
Proud, died in 2006 after 42 years of marriage.
Survivors include five children from his first marriage, Kathy Proud Johnson of Gaithersburg, Terry M. Proud of Forestville, Mary
Proud Wheeler of Waldorf, Wayne G. Proud of Edgewater and John E. Proud Jr. of Wapwallopen, Pa.; a stepson, Doug Hallock
of Gaithersburg; two sisters, Mary P. Cassidy and Grace P. Schutz, both of Frederick; eight grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
