Howard M. Sorrell, 88, a longtime physical education teacher and
coach, died April 13 after complications from a stroke at the
Riderwood retirement community in Baltimore. He had been a
longtime Silver Spring resident.
Dr. Sorrell taught physical education at Wakefield High School in
Arlington County, and during the 1950s and 1960s, he was the
soccer and wrestling coach at American University. He later taught
physical education at elementary schools in Arlington.
Howard Maitland Sorrell was born in Washington and graduated
from Eastern High School in 1939. During World War II, he served
in the Army Air Forces as an air traffic controller. He graduated
from Wilson Teachers College in Washington, where he played on
the basketball and baseball teams. He received a master's degree
from Springfield College in Massachusetts. Later, he received a
doctorate from the University of Maryland, where he researched
physical education for children with disabilities.
Dr. Sorrell was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington
and was chairman of its board of deacons.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Beth Drake Sorrell of Silver
Spring; three sisters, Jeanne Dorr of Baltimore, Doris Shoe of
Carthage, N.C., and Anne Dent of Louisville; and a brother, W.
Byron Sorrell of Deale.

The May 11 obituary of Howard M. Sorrell incorrectly reported that he was a longtime
Silver Spring resident and died at the Riderwood retirement community in Baltimore.
He lived in Hyattsville, Arlington County and other places in the Washington area and
died at the Riderwood retirement community in Silver Spring. There is no Riderwood
in Baltimore.
