Herbert F. Fletcher Sr., 92, a retired Navy pilot and later an assistant manager of what is now Reagan National Airport and then Dulles International
Airport, died of renal failure July 21 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, N.C.
Mr. Fletcher flew bombers out of England during World War II. He left the service after the war but reenlisted in 1952 and served at Patuxent River
Naval Air Station and later at Chincoteague Naval Air Station. He retired from the military in 1959 at the rank of commander.
He joined the Federal Aviation Administration in the early 1960s, serving as assistant manager of the two Washington area airports and as acting
manager of National. He retired a second time in 1972.
Herbert Franklin Fletcher was born in the District. He joined the Navy after graduating from Eastern High School in 1934.
In retirement, he and his family moved from Fairfax City to Carolina Trace, N.C., where he assisted in a number of community projects, including the
establishment of a fire station. He moved to a retirement center in Sanford in 2006.
Mr. Fletcher's wife, the former Lois Kathryn Morgan, died in 1992.
Survivors include three children, Herbert Fletcher Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Susan Stephens of Fredericksburg and Lisa Daniel of Sanford; a sister;
11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
