Helen Marie McCarthy, 94, a retired administrative assistant at Catholic University and the Federal Reserve Board, died June 28
of congestive heart failure at Sunrise assisted-living facility in Lincroft, N.J., where she had lived for the past six years. Mrs.
McCarthy was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved with her family to Washington as a girl. Her father, Isidor Nordstrom, received
the Medal of Honor in 1906 for rescuing crew members of the battleship USS Kearsarge during a fire.
Mrs. McCarthy graduated from Eastern High School and was a secretary for the Prudential Insurance Co. and for the Navy
Department early in her career. She joined Catholic University in 1947 and served as administrative assistant to the dean of the
College of Arts and Sciences for 20 years. She then worked for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors until her retirement in
1978.
She lived in Hyattsville and later in Alexandria and was a member of women's groups at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in
Silver Spring and St. Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria.
She enjoyed baking and entertaining. She participated in theater groups in her youth.
Her husband of 49 years, Francis J. McCarthy, died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Eberhardt of Ocean Township, N.J.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
