Gertrude Ellen Pensmith, 93, a retired secretary at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and an insurance company, died of a
pulmonary embolism Nov. 22 at Washington Hospital Center. She lived in Odenton. Mrs. Pensmith was born Gertrude Ellen
Wenzel in Washington and attended Eastern High School and Strayer University. She was a secretary and stenographer with
several government agencies, the Hartford insurance company and Walter Reed until her retirement in the late 1970s.
She lived in Silver Spring and Cobb Island before moving to Odenton.
Her husband of 64 years, Charles E. Pensmith, died in 2001.
Two children, Walter E. Pensmith and Alma T. Simms, died in 1982 and 2000, respectively.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Pensmith of Odenton; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
