George Zevgolis, 85, a printer for the Washington Evening Star
newspaper for 32 years, died after a stroke April 2 at Mayview
Convalescent Center in Raleigh, N.C.
Mr. Zevgolis worked for the Evening Star from 1946 to 1978. While the
native Washingtonian was attending Eastern High School, he
apprenticed as a printer for another now-defunct local paper, the
Washington Times-Herald.
During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific
theater. He was a volunteer Shriner, a 32nd degree Mason and a member
of the Columbia Typographical Union until his death.
Mr. Zevgolis moved from Oxon Hill to Raleigh in 2000.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Beba H. Zevgolis of Raleigh; two
children, Susan Zevgolis Condon of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Paul S.
Zevgolis of Raleigh; nine siblings, Katherine Owens, Mary Moore,
Michael Zevgolis, Anthony Zevgolis, Bill Zevgolis, Sophia Traylor and
Nitsa Martin, all of Hopewell, Va., Irene Burton of Alexandria and
Victoria Zevgolis of Washington; and four grandchildren.
