Gaye Monaghan, 72, a guidance counselor at Beall Elementary School in
Rockville in the late 1990s and early 200s, died June 9 at her home in Silver
Spring after having strokes.
Mrs. Monaghan's career in education began in the 1970s as a volunteer in a
Head Start class that one of her daughters attended. She received a bachelor's
degree in education from George Washington University in 1990 and a master's
degree in counseling from Johns Hopkins University in 1997.
After working at Beall, she was a volunteer for Court Appointed Special
Advocates and the American Red Cross and was a volunteer English teacher at
the Montgomery County Correctional Facility near Clarksburg.
Gaye Moore was a native Washingtonian and a 1956 graduate of Eastern High
School. As a young woman, she was a co-owner of a dance studio and danced
professionally, including with a Washington Redskins dance group.
Her husband, Michael J. Monaghan, whom she married in 1962, died in 1997.
Survivors include three children, Brigid Monaghan and Colleen Monaghan, both
of Silver Spring, and Patrick Monaghan of Blanchard, Okla.; a brother; and
three grandchildren.
