Edith M. Stamper School librarian, teacher
Edith M. Stamper, 90, a librarian at Springfield Estates Elementary School from 1966 to
1984, died Jan. 16 at her home in Springfield. She had congestive heart failure.
Mrs. Stamper lived and taught in New York before settling in the Washington area in 1960.
Edith Martin was born in Altavista, Va., and raised in Washington, where she graduated from
Eastern High School and Wilson Teachers College. She received a master's degree in
education from New York University.
Her memberships included Springfield United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed sailing and tap dancing.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Robert Stamper, and their two children, Hilary
Owens and Jeffrey Stamper, all of Springfield; a sister, Irene Adams of Arlington County; and
four grandchildren.
