Edith B. "Bobbie" Smith, 91, a retired elementary school teacher and statistician, died of cancer Jan. 16 at Virginia
Hospital Center in Arlington County. She was a longtime Arlington resident.

From 1945 to 1961, Mrs. Smith worked for the old Capital Airlines as a liaison between the airline and the Civil
Aeronautics Board on such issues as routes and tariffs. In 1961, she took a position as a statistical researcher on
commercial aviation with Systems Analysis and Research Corp., which became Avmark Inc. She retired in 1992.

Edith Barry was born in the District and graduated from  
Eastern High School in 1934. After receiving her
undergraduate degree in 1938 from Wilson Teacher's College (now part of the University of the District of Columbia),

she taught for four years at Randle Highlands and Orr elementary schools in Southeast Washington.
During World War II, she worked as a civilian clerk with the Army Air Forces and was involved with mapping.

She was a volunteer with the Arlington County Democratic Party in the 1970s.

Her marriage to Ralph C. Smith ended in divorce.

Survivors include two sons, Barry G. Smith of Arlington and David W. Smith of Great Barrington, Mass.; two sisters; and
a grandson.
