Jean Thompson Ferguson, 94, a longtime member of the Woman's Club of Chevy Chase who was an active outdoorswoman for much of her
life, died June 15 of congestive heart failure at Inova Fairfax Hospital. She moved to McLean this year after living in Chevy Chase for more
than 60 years.
Mrs. Ferguson was a native Washingtonian whose family owned Thompson's Dairy, which operated from 1881 to 1971. She grew up in the
Mount Pleasant neighborhood of the District and was a 1933 graduate of the old Central High School, where she was captain of the rifle
team. She graduated from Cornell University in 1937 and was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority.
She was a skilled canoeist and was a member of the Canoe Cruisers Association of Greater Washington. She was a crack shot with a rifle
and a pistol into her 90s.
In addition to the Woman's Club of Chevy Chase, Mrs. Ferguson was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Chevy
Chase United Methodist Church. She held season tickets to the Washington National Opera, collected Steuben glass and traveled frequently
in Europe.
Her husband of 38 years, Jasper N. "Jack" Ferguson, died in 1978.
Survivors include two sons, John Leland Ferguson of Potomac and William Scott Ferguson of Lincoln, Va.; three grandsons; and five
great-grandchildren.
