Harold  Wiggins "Stuffy" Evans

Harold Wiggins Evans, Jr., 84, a long time resident of Warrenton, VA,  died
April 29, 2006. The son of Harold
Wiggins Evans, Sr. and Mary  Elizabeth James, he was born in Syracuse, NY on November 4, 1921. A  
resident of Takoma Park, MD in his youth, he graduated from old
Central High School, Washington, D.C. in
1940 and graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. Degree in 1947.

His career in the U.S. Marine Corps spanned 32 years and included service with the Sixth Marine Division
during World War II (Okinawa Campaign -1945), the First Marine Division during the Korean War (1953), and
the Third Marine Division during the Vietnam War (1965 and 1971-72). Colonel Evans' medals and personal
decorations include the Legion of  Merit with Combat  and Gold Star, the Navy Commendation Medal with
Combat "V" and Gold Star, and the Chung Mu Medal  with Silver Star awarded by the Government of Korea.

While on active duty he received an M.S. Degree in Management from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA (1962) and was a
graduate of The Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington,DC (1969).

His last active duty assignment was as the Deputy Commander, Marine Corps Development and Education Command, Quantico, VA. He
retired from the Marine Corps in 1974 and established residence in Warrenton, VA.

He was employed at the Commonwealth Savings and Loan, Manassas, VA for over a decade and retired as the Company's President in
1985.

Colonel Evans is survived by his wife, Betty; three sons, Hal, Mike and Gary; five grandchildren, Kim, Jennifer, Michael Jr., Jeff and Beth; and
eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Kenneth J. Evans of Ellicott City, MD.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 10 at St. James Episcopal Church, Culpeper Street, Warrenton, VA 20188. Colonel Evans
will be buried with full military honors at  Arlington National Cemetery on June 28, 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made in his name to the Fauquier County SPCA, PO Box  733, Warrenton, VA 20188
