Arline Spencer Ballard, born on October 6, 1910,
passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2011, in
Leonardtown, Maryland, at Saint Mary's Nursing
Center shortly after a recent fall.
Arline lived 100 years in this world and leaves family
and friends behind who will miss her dearly.
She was born to Myra Leahy Spencer and William Warren Spencer in
Washington, D.C.
She is predeceased by her husband, Stanley Conant Ballard, a native of
Lexington, Massachusetts.
Arline and Stan's daughters are Susan Ballard Kreckman of Leonardtown,
Maryland, and Judith Ballard Ely of Charlottesville. Judith's husband is
Michael Gary Ely. Arline's grandchildren are Kevin Michael Ely of Arlington,
and Lisa Michelle Ely of Herndon. Her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Harrison
Ely, married to Kevin, is the mother of Arline's two great-grandchildren, Sean
Conant Ely and Miles Harrison Ely.
Arline grew up in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the award
winning rifle teams at Central High School in the District and George
Washington University where she received a degree in economics and library
science.
She spent her early working years at the Red Cross in Washington and
after moving to Boston, Massachusetts, was a millinery merchandiser. She
attended Simmons College in Boston toward her masters' degree in
merchandising. It was there that she met and married her husband, Stanley, of
Lexington, Massachusetts, to whom she was married for 57 years until his
death.
Her two daughters were born in Lexington. Arline taught in the Lexington,
Massachusetts school system before the family moved to Easton, Maryland,
in 1960. She taught in Centreville, Maryland, after taking graduate courses at
American University and receiving her certification as a Maryland teacher and
school librarian.
Arline then worked as a school librarian at Colonel Richardson High
School in Caroline County, Maryland, retiring in 1982. She and Stan moved to
Waldorf, Maryland in 1993 to live with her daughter, Susan, and to receive
care nearby for Stan's failing health.
After he passed away, Arline and Susan moved to Leonardtown in 2000
where they lived until Arline's recent death. She spent much time with her
daughter, Judi, in Charlottesville as well.
Arline remained well read, well spoken, and was endlessly curious about
politics, sports and the world around her until her recent fall. All that a
mother's love can do for her children, she did for her daughters and family.
She had adapted from a childhood in Washington with gas lights, carriages and
street cars to life in the current times with a spirit of moving forward, dealing
with the challenges and changes around her, always with spunk and
determination. May God lead her now to a restful place.
There will be a private interment service at the Oxford Cemetery in
Oxford, Maryland, this fall.
Arrangements are being provided by Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home,
P.A. in Charlotte Hall, Maryland.
