| John B. Umhau Jr., 81, a physician who had a family practice in Chevy Chase for more than 50 years, died April 16 at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore from injuries suffered in a fall. He lived in Chevy Chase. |

| Dr. Umhau was a native Washingtonian and a graduate of Coolidge High School. He served as a Navy radar technician in World War II. |
|
| After the war, he graduated from George Washington University and received a medical degree from GWU in 1952. During the summers, he was a park ranger at Yellowstone National Park. |
|
| Dr. Umhau maintained a private practice from 1954 until his retirement last year. He was president of the Montgomery County Medical Society in 1973 and 1974 and was chief of the medical staff at Suburban Hospital from 1976 to 1979. He also served on the medical staffs at Holy Cross, Montgomery General and Washington Adventist hospitals. |

| He was the physician for the National 4-H Youth Conference Center and for Boy Scout Troop 255 in Chevy Chase. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and was an accredited medical examiner and accident investigator for the Federal Aviation Administration. |

| In addition to flying, Dr. Umhau was a published photographer and had many other interests, including stamp collecting, magic, beekeeping and travel. He particularly enjoyed Viennese waltzes and traveled to Vienna with his wife for New Year's Eve waltz celebrations. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Washington and was on the board of directors of the National Lutheran Home in Rockville. He was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, the St. Andrew's Society of Washington, Columbia Country Club and Cosmos Club. |

| Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Janet Nufer Umhau of Chevy Chase; three sons, Dr. John C. Umhau of Potomac, Dr. William F. 'Biff' Umhau of Owings and Dr. Andrew N. Umhau of Chevy Chase; a sister; and 10 grandchildren. |
