Poor Gary Williams, his team gets bombed again, this time its by Clemson 93-64.  Also he gets dissed by the media (voice,
print, TV) and fair weather fans.  I think you have to look at the pluses and minus.  The plus has an NCAA D-1
championship, great game coach, good guy.  Minus, not a good recruiter, doesn’t visit homes of players he’s trying to
recruit, dull if any personality, lost touch of the way you should recruit.

Lefty was a great recruiter but a poor game coach.  Bud Milliken is great in all aspects of the game.

I think Gary Williams should stay as the men’s basketball coach.

The best recruiters at Maryland are Brenda Frese and Missy Hargae.  Maryland has some great supporters in Senate
President Mike Miller, Betty and Benny Alperstein, Frank “Bevo” Shore, David Carroll, Ned Carey, former Governor
Marvin Mandell, and Judy and Jack Zane.

BOXING HIT IN SALISBURY

Over 5,000 boxing fans showed up at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center for a big show put on by Prize Fight
Promotions, LLC.  The results were:  in the 12 round main event for the NABF light heavyweight championship Yusaf
Mack took the title with a split decision over Chris Henry.  Local favorite Fernarca Guerrero ran his record to 13-0 with an
unanimous decision over Gabriel Rosado.  Harrison Cuello TKO’ed Daniel Gonzalez at 1:34 of the fourth round.  Farah
Ennis goes to 9-0 with a unanimous decision over Chris Archer.  Rounding out the card Shawn Porter stayed unbeaten
taking a unanimous over Cory Jones.  Matchmaker Chris Middendorf put a nice card together for this event.

BASEBALL NOTES

Well the Baltimore Orioles finally gave Brian Roberts a four year 40 million dollar contract to stay in Baltimore.

I would think Luke Scott would have some concern about the way the Orioles are handing Pie the left field job.

A-Rod will never make it in Hollywood, a very poor actor.

Ryan Zimmerman signed a new contract with the Nats.  The team has a potent lineup. He got a deal like the Orioles gave
Nick Markakis, he deserved the same kind of deal.

How did the Nats get in so much trouble and not know how old and who he was?  Jim Bowden should get the hook for
putting the Nats in that mess.

Tom Glavine re-ups with the Atlanta Braves.

Next week I’ll take a closer look at baseball’s Spring Training.

Oh Say, Can You Sing?

Baysox To Host National Anthem Auditions

The Bowie Baysox are searching for the most talented members of the community to complement one of the best teams in
minor league baseball. The Baysox will host live auditions for the national anthem at Prince George's Stadium on
Saturday, March 14. The team has a live performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before every game at Prince
George's Stadium.

Baysox Director of Marketing Brandan Kaiser is looking forward to this year's auditions. "We are really excited to host
national anthem auditions at the ballpark again this year. It is a tremendous thrill to hear area fans take the mic and
showcase their talent, and we love giving them the opportunity to perform in front of thousands of fans at each game."

Gates will open for registration at 9:00 a.m. and auditions will begin at 9:30 a.m. Every participant must register, and
auditions will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. The auditions will be held rain or shine and reservations for
audition times will not be accepted. All auditions must be done in person, no CD's, cassettes or videos will be accepted for
review.   Last year, 53 people auditioned to sing the national anthem.

Assistant General Manager Phil Wrye has been a part of the auditions for years. "The national anthem is an integral part
of baseball, and the Baysox take great pride in being able to involve local talent in an American tradition."

The Baysox will open their 17th season as the class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, April 8, in Akron.
The team will play its first game back home at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday, April 16. Don't miss a moment of
the action as the Baysox attempt to bring home their first Eastern League championship in 2009! Ticket packages are

BSU’S JULIETTE TUNER NAMED TO CIAA ALL-ROOKIE TEAM

The 2009 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball All-Rookie Teams, along with their respective
Rookies of the Year, have been announced as voted on by the CIAA Sports Information Directors’ Association.

Bowie State University's Juliette Turner (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy) is among the five-member women's team.
Through games of February 14th, Turner has started 17-of-25 games, averaging 6.0 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per
game.  She is shooting 52 percent from the field (56-of-108), 44 percent behind the arc (four-of-nine) and 52 percent from
the charity stripe (33-of-63).

For the second consecutive year the CIAA Women’s Rookie of the Year wears a uniform for the Lady Falcons of Saint
Augustine’s College. This season the honor goes to Keyona Bryant, a 6-0 center who hails from Springdale, MD (Flowers
High School). Bryant, an 8-time CIAA Rookie of the Week, has been nothing short of phenomenal this season for SAC.
She leads the Lady Falcons in scoring at 17.8 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 7.3 boards per
contest. Bryant, the conference’s second leading scorer, has registered four double-doubles this season and was the Lady
Falcons' top scorer in 14 games this season.

The Women’s All-Rookie Basketball team will be honored at the tip-off luncheon in Charlotte, NC the week of the 2009
CIAA Basketball Tournament. A complete listing of the 2009 All-Rookie Teams is as follows:

BOWIE STATE INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CONFERENCE RUNNER-UP

After making history as the first men’s cross country team to finish as the CIAA Runner-Up (2008), the Bowie State
University men’s indoor track and field team finished strong in the Indoor CIAA Conference Championship as the CIAA
Runner-Up.

The first race of the day was the Distance Medley Relay (DMR), which consists of the 1200M, 400M, 800M, and 600M
races.  The DMR team of David Rustin, Walter Morton, Malcolm Womack, and Daryl Sanders finished second to St.
Augustine. Freshmen Collin Cumberbatch finished 2nd in the Shot Put with a throw of 45 feet 9 inches. Joffrey Alcidor
won the Pole Vault and broke the school record with a vault of 11 feet 1¾ inches.

The 1600 M (One Mile) event was an exciting race. Sanders lost one shoe when someone stepped on the back of his foot
and got behind early in the race. Forced to play catch up after retrieving his shoe, Sanders sprinted full speed ahead while
approximately 125 meters behind the pack in last place. Sanders came from behind, remarkably passing his opponents one
by one, to finish third in the race. The sophomore  came back later in the day to participate in the 5000 Meter staying in
second place much of the race by about 70 meters behind the first place runner.  When the final lap bell sounded, Sanders
took off like a gazelle with BSU and Saint Augustine’s athletes cheering him on as he and ran down a Virginia Union
runner, to become the first athlete from BSU to win the 5000 meter race. Sanders was the teams leading scorer and was
the third leading scorer for all men’s teams in CIAA.

Bowie State coach Michelle Latimer remarked, “Despite being plagued with injuries and the flu, I am very proud of the
Men’s Team’s finish as the CIAA runner-up. Aaron Johnson made the National board for the High Jump and Dion
Rodriguez was one tenth of a second from the National board for his first meet of the season. I am especially proud of the
middle distance and distance runners as they were the top scorers for this meet.” Making the National Board qualifies
these athletes for the National Championship meet.

The Lady Bulldogs were also beset with injuries; however, like the men’s team, they were able to come away as the CIAA
Runner-Up as well.  Starting with the DMR race, the women finished in 3rd place. This team consisted of Michelle Palmer,
Akia Wesley, Tonya Walton and Shamika Patton.

Elaine Rhoades claimed the Long Jump title, jumping 18' feet and 2½ inches. She went on to finish 2nd in the Triple Jump
(38 feet 5½inches) and was the leading scorer for the women’s team scoring 22 points. With a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
finish, the Lady Bulldogs ran a sweep in the Shot Put event (Lakisha Carney 1st, Brandy Peat 2nd and Kayla Campbell
3rd). The Virginia connection put on a show for the home crowd with all four of these ladies are well known in the
Freeman Center where the meet took place. This includes Elaine Rhoades (Norfolk, Va.), Kaylan Campbell (Hampton,
Va.) and Lakisha Carney along with Brandy Peat from (Newport News, Va.). Rhoades is now on the National board for the
60-meter hurdles and she has advanced on the Long Jump and Triple Jump boards. She is also on the board for the Multi-
Events.

The leading scoring group were the Bowie State throwers. Coach Latimer beamed with pride after the meet stating, “I am
really excited to see our young runners doing so well.  A lot of our student-athletes that are scoring the points are
freshmen and sophomores and I truly believe the best is yet to come!  Combined with our upperclassmen, the future looks
promising.”

LADY BUULDOGS CAPTURE EAST TITLE WITH 73-62 WIN AT ELIZABETH CITY STATE

Bowie State held off a pesky Elizabeth City State team, winning a key CIAA Eastern Division contest 72-63.  The win
improves Bowie State to 16-10 overall, 14-4 in the CIAA and locks up the East at 6-2 and a first round bye in next weeks
CIAA Tournament.

Bowie State rolled out to an early 15-3 advantage and increased their lead to 23-10 by the 9:11 mark of the first half.
However, Elizabeth City State was not impressed.  ECSU’s Lady Vikings went on a 6-0 run to pull within seven and closed
the gap to 31-27 by halftime.

Joyce Freeman was a key for Elizabeth City State in the first half, scoring nine points and Ashley Alexander added seven.
Elizabeth City State made 11-of-34 first half field goal attempts, with three of those made field goals behind the arc.

ECSU’s Briana Glover began the second half with a layup but Bowie State answered with an 11-0 run, giving the Bowie
State Lady Bulldogs a 42-29 cushion.  Bowie State maintained a double-digit lead most of the second half with sophomores
Lakisha Walker and Teaunsha Robinson leading the charge.  Elizabeth City State was able to pull within 66-59 with 2:28
left to play following a conventional three-point play by Glover.

Bowie State shot a blistering 58 percent from the field in the second half on 14-of-24 shooting.  Four of five Bowie State
starters scored in double figures with Robinson leading the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points.  Junior Bianca Lee added 13 to
the book and Walker, senior Denisha Kenion and junior Denita Hill chipped in a dozen points each.  Freshman Juliette
Turner, a member of the CIAA All-Rookie Team, led BSU in rebounds with seven to go along with six points.

Glover paced the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State with 20 points and Freeman added 13 points.  Kearah Jefferys
scored 11 points and April Whitaker pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for ECSU.

BULLDOGS SUFFER 65-60 SETBACK TO ELIZABETH CITY STATE

Junior Andrew Engel scored a team-high 17 points, all in the second half, but Bowie State suffers a 65-60 defeat to
Elizabeth City State.

Bowie State began the night very slow as the Elizabeth City State Vikings bolted out to a 12-4 lead and held Bowie State
six-of- 25 field goal shooting (24 percent) in the first 20 minutes.  BSU’s Bulldogs missed all seven of its first half three-
point tries and made just two-of-eight from the free throw line.

Elizabeth City State was almost as bad, shooting nine-of-20 from the floor, including two-of-seven behind the arc and three-
of-11 at the charity stripe and went into halftime with a 23-14 lead.

Elizabeth City State began the second stanza with a 12-0 run to give the Vikings their largest lead of the night at 35-14.
Bowie State junior Delmar Carey scored a lay-up at the 17:10 mark to stop the ECSU run.

Trailing 42-21 with 14:08 left to play, Bowie State went on a 12-0 run to narrow the gap to 42-33.  Soon after this run, is
when Engel caught fire for BSU’s Bulldogs.   Engel pulled Bowie State within nine (52-43) and junior Duke Crews followed
that with a dunk.  Engel came through again, nailing drilling two deep 3-point buckets and added a lay-up to bring the
Bulldogs within three at 58-55 with 1:23 left on the clock.

Elizabeth City State’s Anthony Hilliard scored a crucial bucket in the paint with 31 seconds left in regulation and was
fouled on the play by Crews.  Hilliard missed the free throw and Engel nailed his fifth triple of the game, closing BSU’s
deficit to 60-58.

Elizabeth City State had trouble getting the ball inbounds and BSU thought they created a five-second violation.  However,
ECSU’s Trent Bivens called the Vikings final timeout with 22 seconds remaining, avoiding the violation.  Bivens wrapped
up the evening with a team-high 17 points on four-of-eight field goal shooting and eight-of-nine from the free throw line.

Following the timeout, DeJuan Morrison (11 points) snuck behind the Bulldogs defense to score a wide open lay-up.  BSU
senior Curtis Massey responded with a quick lay-up on the other end but Mel Johnson added a bucket and free throw with
three-tenths of a second to seal the win for Elizabeth City State

Other than Engel, Crews scored 14 points a hauled down a game-high 17 rebounds.  As a team, Bowie State connected on
17-of-26 second half field goals (65 percent), which included seven-of-nine behind the arc.  However, Bowie State managed
just seven-of-18 from the free throw line on the night.

Elizabeth City State had an awful night at the free throw line as well, converting only 18-of-32 but turned 16 Bowie State
turnovers into 26 Vikings points.  Elizabeth City State will wrap up their regular season – Saturday, February 21st hosting
the CIAA Eastern Division leading Panthers of Virginia Union before a nationally televised audience.

Bowie State will close out their regular season at home – Saturday (2/21) against the Pioneers of Columbia Union College
at 7 p.m.

LADY BULLDOGS CRUISE TO 69-52 WIN OVER LINCOLN (PA.)

It wasn't very pretty but Bowie State completed the series sweep against Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, defeating the
Lady Lions 68-52.  Junior Bianca Lee scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

It was rough start for Lincoln (Pa.) as the Lady Lions fell behind 37-21 by halftime.  Lincoln (Pa.) made only seven-of-34
(21 percent) field goal attempts in the first half.  Twenty of the Lady Lions attempts were behind the arc with three being
successful.

In comparison, Bowie State hit 14-of-31 from the floor (45 percent) and made two-of-eight behind the arc.  Points in the
paint and bench scoring were the difference in the first 20 minutes with Bowie State accounting for 18 and 17 respectively.

Bowie State opened their largest lead of the night (43-26) at the 17:08 mark of the second half, but the Lady Lions roared
back to pull within nine (46-37) with 12:31 left to play.  Unfortunately for Lincoln (Pa.) that’s as close as the home team
would get.

The Lincoln (Pa.) shooting percentage improved in the final half, moving up to 42 percent on 12-of-29 shooting, which
included five-of-eight behind the arc.  Angelle Green had the hot hand, draining four 3-pointers and led Lincoln (Pa.) in
scoring with 14 points.  Tanina Cook was the only other Lincoln Lady Lions starter to score in double figures, adding 10
points to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds.  Sharay DuBose tallied double-digit rebounds as well, pulling down 10.

Other double figure scorers for Bowie State include sophomores Brittney Jackson and Lakisha Walker with 11 points
apiece.  Walker led Bowie State in rebounds, tying her career-high of 11 boards.

MASSEY LEADS BULLDOGS TO 75-62 WIN OVER SAINT PAUL'S

Senior Curtis Massey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) made the most of his final CIAA game inside Bowie State's A.C. Jordan
Arena, scoring a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 75-62 win over Saint Paul's
College.

After knocking down fifty percent from the field in the first half on 14-of-28 shooting, Bowie State strolled into halftime
with a 37-27 advantage.  Even though The Saint Paul’s College first half offensive sputtered in the first period with the
Tigers shot 10-of-30 from the field (33 percent), the Saint Paul’s defense forced Bowie State into 13 first period turnovers.

In the second half, the Tigers continued to apply pressure defense.  Having been down by as many as 19 points in the
second period, the Tigers consistently capitalized off of turnovers and second chances.   Bowie State committed a total of 28
turnovers which resulted in 37 Saint Paul’s points off those turnovers.

Bowie State (14-11, 10-7 CIAA and 5-2 in the East) increased their field goal shooting percentage in the second half,
making 13-of-24 from the floor (54 percent).

Saint Paul’s (6-18, 3-14 CIAA and 1-6 in the East) was led in scoring by Ricardo Pride with 17 points.  Maurice Reevey and
Bruce Royal added 11 and 10 points respectively for the SPC Tigers.

Juniors Duke Crews (Hampton, Va.) and Corey Stevens (Glenarden, Md.) added 11 and 10 points respectively.  Crews also
added a game-high 11 rebounds and junior Cassin Diggs (Williamsport, Pa.) recorded his third double-double of the year,
chipping in 11 points and 10 rebounds.

ST. PAUL'S ENDS BOWIE STATE'S STREAK WITH 57-54 VICTORY OVER LADY BULLDOGS

Saint Paul's (13-12, 10-7 CIAA and 5-2 East) used an 11-point cushion and held on down the stretch to defeat Bowie State
57-54.  Junior Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, Md.) paced Bowie State with 21 points six rebounds, two assists and two steals and
sophomore Lakisha Walker (Baltimore, Md.) came off the BSU bench to add 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The loss snaps the Lady Bulldogs seven-game winning streak and gives Bowie State a 5-2 record in the CIAA Eastern
Division, 13-4 conference record and 15-10 overall.

The Lady Tigers took the early lead in the game scoring on 12-of-30 field goals from the field. With Tatiana Ellis leading
the way with 11-points, the Lady Tigers go in at halftime on top, 31-20. Bowie State shot 33-percent from the field in the
first half, connecting on eight-of-24 shots from the field. Lee led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 11 first half points of
her own.

The Lady Tigers held the lead for most of the second half, but Bowie fought hard in the last minutes to push the tempo and
close the margin.  A Walker lay-up gave Bowie State their second and final lead of the game (47-46) with 6:53.  However,
Ellis answered with back-to-back 3-point buckets to push the Saint Paul's lead to 54-49, killing the Bowie State rally.

Tatiana Ellis led all scorers in the game with 23-points on 9-of-19 field goals made. Ellis added four rebounds and one assist
on the afternoon. Gabrielle Johnson worked equally as hard, netting 11 points and 11 rebounds.

WE GET LETTERS…..

Bill,

Lance Klein is in the hospital with a brain tumor.  Please spread the word to any of the 59’ers.  If anyone wants his
address I will gladly send it to them.  For those who might be willing say a prayer for him.  Thanks.

Elaine

Dear Elaine,

I am asking all my friends and readers to pray ofr Lance.  I also ask for prays for Jamie Clasan.

Bill

Bill,

Late news from Donnie Neuenberger's number one fan in Daytona on the Nationwide Series race here on Saturday,
Valentine's Day.  I was away and not able to watch the race but it looks like our favorite driver from Maryland, Donnie
Neuenberger, qualified and finished the race and not involved in any accidents.

Drivers for the 500 yesterday not so fortunate, accidents and rain forcing a halt with Matt Kenseth out in front at that
time.  Hate this. Folks pay out soooo much money to be here (we have had perfect weather for weeks) and see the biggest
race of the season only to be sent home early and missing out on the hoped for exciting finish with top drivers battling it
out to win the big one.  It has been dry here for so long but yesterday rain was not a happy visitor to our town.  The next
Nationwide race is scheduled for Fontana, California on Saturday the 21st.

Way to go Donnie!

Blessings and love to all,

Dale

Dear Dale,

This is going to be Donnie’s year!

Bill

Bill,

Thanks for my hometown connection and birthday wishes, 74 now since Jan. 29th, Iva Lea the 31st I believe.

Will be rooting for Donnie to qualify tomorrow for the Saturday Nationwide Series race which would be a great Valentine's
Day present for Donnie to present to his mom JoAnn Atkins, who is down here now with the team I believe.  Local
longtime driver Mark Martin almost got the second pole at today's Gatorade Duel races, but the young gun Kyle Busch
sneaked past him on the last lap to grab the second pole for Sunday's 500. Jeff Gordon brought home the first pole for his
lovely wife and baby.  The Ravens will not seem like the Ravens without Ray Lewis.  If he signs with the Redskins maybe
he can spark them up a bit.

Blessings to you and your,

Dale

Bill,

Did that Austin Smith hang out at the Brookland Inn or the House of Backus at 4th and Rhode Island in NE DC..I think I
remember him.

Francis Stringfellow

Bill,

Did you go to the dances at St. Martins on North Capital Street in NE DC?

Lucy Nolan

Dear Lucy,

Yes I did and a great place to meet a hottie like you.

Bill

SPORTS NOTES

Donnie Gray has recovered from the injury that sidelined him last basketball season and is back doing his excellent
officiating in D-1 hoops.

Congratulations to Donnie Neuenberger on finishing 36th in the Nationwide NASCAR race.  He started 43, finished 36th,
no accidents in the NASCAR race at Daytona.  Randy and Bobby Clemens are BIG fans of NASCAR.

I wonder where they are now…Virginia Duke Jacobs, Barbara Kight, Katline Hawkins, Judy Hurst, Ann O’Keefe, Diane
Ford, Francis Starr, Barbara Aque, Dick Snyder, and Shirley Dahl.

In my story on Anne Arundel Community College I left out the name of the lady who takes the pictures of the game and
that is Sharon Corbett who does a great job with the camera.

Former Caps goalie Ollie “Goalie” Kolzig who has been sidelined all season with Tampa Bay with an injury will probably
retire from hockey.

No truth to the rumor that “Downtown” Brown, PP, TT, or Weasel are trying out to be the Bowie Baysox mascot or to sing
the “National Anthem” at Baysox games.

Deepest sympathy goes to the families of the following:

Paul “Pop” Edward Newman (graduate of Eastern (DC) HS).

Mildren Benson “Millie” Tobin (graduate of Western (DC) HS).

Robert “Robie” Brian Stock (graduate of Patuxent HS).

Theodore Herbert “Herb” Taylor (Episcopal (VA) HS grad).

Brad Van pelt (former NFL linebacker).

Ted Uhlaender (former major league baseball outfielder).

David Charles Bradley (Good Counsel HS grad).

Joseph A. Dunn, Sr. (St. Anthony (DC) HS grad).

Is Samari Rolle headed to the NY Jets?

Tubby Smith is doing a super job at Minnesota.

Leonardtown’s Charles Bankins is the new Special Teams and Tightends coach with the University of Maryland football
team.

DC United Soccer’s team is going to relocate to Prince George’s County.

No truth to the rumor that Ron “Hoagie” Stover is going to be the new Nats South American scout.

The Baltimore Examiner is no longer in business but the DC Examiner is.
