MCCAFFREY’S WORLD
By
Bill McCaffrey
Now the Super Bowl is history the Steelers are the Champs with their 27-23 win over the Cardinals in an exciting finish
after a slow start, the ugly looking “Terrible Towels” are now put away in mothballs. Of course the Ravens are looking
forward to next season, one probably without “Raghead” Ray Lewis. Lewis could wind up with the Jets, Cowboys,
Redskins, Patriots, or the Dolphins.
The Redskins can’t look forward to too much because they are terrible now and will be this coming season.
One of the Super Bowl officials is from the area – Terry McAulay (see JW’s letter in “we get letters”).
Larry Fitzgerald scored two TD’s to lead the NFC to a 30-21 victory over the AFC in the Pro Bowl.
The Cardinals fired their defensive coordinator.
Who did Bill Cowher mean when he said in an interview with Matthew Kaminski in the Wall Street Journal “a lot of guys
(in the NFL) are trying to buy themselves a winning team”, I wonder who it could be? Danny, Jerry or Bill?
Matt Cavanaugh has been hired by Rex Ryan to be his quarterback coach with the Jets. Isn’t he the same one who was
canned by the Ravens?
UNIVERISTY OF MARYLAND NEWS
The Maryland football recruiting class is ranked in the top 30 but nowhere close to the top ten. Jamie Franklin has been
named head football coach in waiting for the Terps for whenever Ralph Friedgen leaves that post and the move has
everyone in College Park jumping for joy but I am reserving judgment here. Despite kudos for his recruiting but isn’t he
the one who brought QB Steffey to the Terps?
Gary Williams Terps have had some good games this season but I can’t get excited with a Terp one point win over a
terrible Georgia Tech team. Don’t look for the Terps to scare anyone in the ACC men’s tournament, they may not even
get an NIT bid.
Brenda Frese’s Lady Terps nipped Florida State 72-71 on a buzzer beating shot by Kristi Toliver to go to 17-4 overall
and 5-2 in ACC play. The women have a chance to take the ACC tournament.
The “Examiner” on February 1st in a story by Sean Welch titled “Terp Rants” and “They Got Away” showed 12 players
but hey how many of those graduated from the schools they went to? Two or three maybe? Does Gary or UM want
those type of players?
The Lady Terps downed NC State 87-66 to up their record to 18-4, 6-2 in the ACC. Former Terp Laura Harper had her
jersey retired. They went to 19-4, 7-2 in ACC with a 85-81 win over Boston College. Frese has the Lady Terps ready
for the ACC tournament.
ANNE ARUNDEL COMMUNITY COLLEGE DOING WELL
Anne Arundel Community College has been improving in basketball both men’s and women’s and that is due to great
coaching they are receiving from Tom Smith (men’s) and John Wardell (women’s). They also have a coordinator of
Athletics Bruce Springer who gives them the backing and support needed.
Let’s start with the men’s team, Smith a Mackin (DC) HS grad who gets a lot of help and support from his family. Smith
has an outstanding staff including the very knowledgeable Joe Swoden his assistant, trainer Misty Sax, and score
keeper Marga Tucker.
Some of his top players are: Nahshon Brown, Kevin Coates, Justin Brown, Michael Dixon, Michael Mongelluzzo, and
Andre Dotson. Others who contribute are Josh Gerber, Dylan Ritson, Kendrick Maybank, Lionel Coleman, and Brandon
Edwards.
The team had a big win over Hudson Valley when the team from New York was the number one rated Junior college
team in the country, Smith and the team. Smith’s program received kudos from two legends Bob Kirk (Allegany’s great
coach) and Bill Lewitt (Cecil’s top coach). Fans are missing out by not turning out to watch the AACC men’s team in
action.
You can’t ignore the great job John Wardell is doing with the AACC women, his staff includes Sierra Garrison (assistant
coach), Marga Tucker (statistican), Lisa Gould and Felecia Watson (managers) and Misty Sox (trainer). Wardell’s work
has his team in a contending position. Some of his top players are: Jacklyn Mucci (she had 32 points in a nail niting loss
67-65 overtime loss to Howard CC, she also grabbed 17 boards), Jade Hamilton, Kristin Tucker, Mollie McCarthy, Katie
Beall, Adrienne and Danielle Webber. I also like the back court combo of Chelsea Rohleder and Ashley Wagner. Nucci,
Rohleder, Beall, Hamilton plus the rebounding led by Tucker should make the team ready for the playoffs.
The AACC women won their final regular season game on Tuesday against Baltimore CC. Nucci looks like a D-1 player
and she can go to the hoop with the best of them.
Yes the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams are in good hands with Smith and Wardell! Put them right up there with
the other Maryland JUCO coaches and programs.
Some other top players I have seen in games this season are:
Women’s –
Rachael Eaby (CSM) spark plug and hustles all the time.
Ashley Queen (Cecil) hails from Southern Maryland.
Amanda Schwartz (Howard CC) hustles all the time.
Men’s –
Byron Morgan (CSM)
Darious Clark (Cecil)
Omar Strong (Cecil)
Joe Jones (Howard)
Steven Shepp (Allegany)
Shaw Buckner (PGCC)
Kevin Mead (Harford)
I really like Kevin Coates of AACC, he’s a very good player and is focused on and off the court.
POLK AND ROBINSON TABBED AS CIAA COACH AND PLAYER OF THE WEEK
First-year head coach Donna Polk and sophomore Teaunsha Robinson have been tabbed as the Central intercollegiate
Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach and Player of the Week respectively.
Polk guided the Eastern Division leading Bowie State Lady Bulldogs to a third undefeated week, knocking off Virginia
Union, Saint Augustine's and sweeping the season series against Shaw. BSU held this week’s opponents to 48 points
per game while averaging 56 points per game. Robinson played a major role in BSU's perfect 3-0 week, averaging
14.0 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game.
BOWIE STATE ROMPS OVER SAINT AUGUSTINE’S 61-45
Bowie State ran their current winning streak to four games after defeating Saint Augustine’s College 61-45, improving its
record to 12-9 on the year and 11-3 in the CIAA.
The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs led the entire first half and held a 14 point advantage (28-14) at the 5:06 mark. BSU
connected on 10-of-22 first half field goal attempts (46 percent) which included three-of-nine behind the arc and 10-of-
13 from the free throw line and went into halftime with a 33-24 lead.
Saint Augustine’s (11-10, 6-8 CIAA) made nine-of 28 from the floor, four-of-12 behind the arc and two-of-four from the
charity stripe. LeKiesha White and Keyona Bryant led the Lady Falcons in the first half with eight and six points
respectively.
The Bowie State lead grew to a game-high 17 points (48-31) with 11:22 left in the game, capping off a 13-7 run. Saint
Augustine’s trimmed their deficit to nine, going on an 8-0 run but would get no closer.
Sophomores Teaunsha Robinson and Lakisha Walker paced Bowie State with 20 and 12 points respectively. Robinson
also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while Walker and junior Bianca Lee added six rebounds each.
Bryant led Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons with 12 points and added eight rebounds. White also scored in double-digits,
chipping in 12 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.
KENION LAYUP PROPELS LADY BULLDOGS PAST SHAW 57-55
Senior Denisha Kenion scored a lay-up with 8.2 seconds to propel the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs to a 57-55
road win against the Shaw University Lady Bears inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw turned the ball over 15 times in the first half of play and Bowie State took advantage, scoring 14 points off those
turnovers. Bowie State did their share of turning the ball over as well, committing 10 in the first period.
Both teams were nine-of-30 from the field in the 20 minutes. Shaw and Bowie State combined for one-of-17 behind the
arc, with Bowie State’s Bianca Lee recording the lone triple. The Shaw Lady Bears controlled the backboards during the
first period, outrebounding BSU’s Lady Bulldogs 26-19.
Shaw (11-11, 7-7 CIAA) began the second half with a 7-0 run to take a 28-27 lead but sophomore Lakisha Walker
(Baltimore, Md.) stopped the run with a lay-up at the 15:43 mark. Tanisha McGaughey gave Shaw a 37-33 advantage
and Jessica Davis added a pair of free throws that gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the game at 38-35 at the 12:
35 mark.
The lead would change hands several times over the next few until Bowie State’s Brittney Jackson (Laurel, Md.) drilled a
3-pointer, followed by back-to-back lay-ups by junior Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, Md.) and Jackson shifting the advantage
back to Bowie State at 51-47.
Shaw went on an 8-4 run to tie the game at 55-55 following a Jessica Davis jumper. Shaw’s Lady Bears had a chance to
send the game overtime but Shana Andrus missed the first of two free throws with one second left to play. Andrus
intentionally missed the second free throw. However, the attempt did not draw iron, creating a violation and sealing the
victory for Bowie State.
BSU’s Lady Bulldogs were led by Jackson with a career-high 14 points. Jackson hit three-of-four field goals and
converted all seven of her free throws. Kenion and Walker added 10 points each and freshmen Juliette Turner grabbed
a team-high seven rebounds for Bowie State.
Ashley Jackson was Shaw’s leading scorer with 19 points and Andrus along with Jessica Davis contributed 10 points
apiece. Andrus hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds and Jackson grabbed another 10 boards for the Shaw Lady
Bears.
SHAW BEARS HOLD OFF BOWIE STATE BULLDOGS 65-61
Senior Curtis Massey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) recorded game-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds but it wasn't enough as
the Shaw University Bears defeat Bowie State's Bulldogs 65-61.
Shaw (9-13, 6-8 CIAA) held a 14 point advantage at the 5:26 mark if the opening period and went into halftime with a 33-
24 lead. Bowie State controlled the backboards in the first period, outrebounding the Bears 18-8. However, Bowie
State had trouble shooting making just seven-of-18 from the floor (39 percent) compared to 10-of-23 from the field (44
percent) for Shaw.
Bowie State (11-11, 8-7 CIAA) cut the halftime deficit to 46-45 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game on a
deep 3-pointer by junior Charles Richardson (Suitland, Md.) and Massey gave the Bulldogs their first lead at 47-46 with
9:53 left in the contest. BSU’s Bulldogs maintained their lead until Shaw’s Will Graham stuck two free throws to tie the
game at 50 with 5:41 left to play.
A dunk by Shaw’s Najee Edwards put the home team ahead by two but a Massey jumper knotted things up again at 52-
52. From there, Shaw went on a 10-1 run and never let Bowie State get any closer than three points in the final minutes
of the game.
Andrew Engel was the only other Bowie State player to score in double figures adding 13 points. Bowie State continued
to control the glass, ending the game with a 43-26 advantage. Turnovers really hurt the Bulldogs as well with the
Bulldogs committing 28 on the night.
Shaw was paced by Raheem Smith and Rodney Callwood with 14 points each. The Shaw Bears bench outscored BSU’s
bench 42-17.

WE GET LETTERS……..
Bill,
Trip Down Memory Lane
After reading your newsletter, I would like to share a recent experience of mine with you. This past November, St.
Gabriel's Parish in Washington D.C. hosted a mass and reception to honor the Good Sisters of the Holy Name. It had
been over 45 years since I had attended mass at St. Gabriels where I served as an alter boy for Monsignor
Miltenberger, Father Curlin and Father McCaffrey. It was great to see Father McCaffrey and Sister Josetta Maria who
served as principal during my years at the school. The event was a trip back in time with fond memories of growing up
in Pleasant Hills which is bordered by Harewood Road, Hawai Avenue, Second Street and North Capitol Street. Some
of those fond memories include walking to and from school on Webster Street; walking through the U.S. Soldiers Home
to the Safeway, Five and Ten, and the drug store with the nice soda fountain on Upshur Street; and going to Sim's
Market on Rock Creek Church Road located between North Capitol and Fort Totten Drive. My thoughts also included
our adjoining neighborhood Turkey Thicket, where my in-laws and friends lived and attended St. Anthony's.
The mass and reception honoring the Good Sisters of the Holy Name brought many former students back such as
Monsignor Essex, Bill Kelly, John Kelly, Joe Berry, Paul West, and Ty Kemp who went to school with you. As a matter of
fact, Ty's sister Margaret married my cousin Joe Brooks. The reunion was enjoyable but little did we know that many of
us would be back to the church within the week for the funeral of Ty and Margaret's brother, Father Patrick Kemp.
Father Kemp was loved by all and I will always be grateful that he was able to baptize my grandaughters, Kylie and Molly
Durkin (ages 3 and 1). St. Gabriel's and St. Anthony's in North Beach, Maryland both had beautiful services for a man
who will be dearly missed.
Bill, I really enjoyed reading your column and it inspired me to share some of my own pleasant memories of growing up
in Washington, D.C. I look forward to reading more of your columns in the future.
Austin Smith, Jr.
Austin,
Thank you and good report.
Bill
Bill,
Great news. Just got an email from Terry McAulay. He said that he was fortunate to get assigned the Super Bowl this
weekend. For those of us who have known him since when he was in the WDFOA high school group in Maryland and in
the ACC before being accepted into the NFL in 1998, the fact that he was chosen to work this game is about as lucky as
Tiger Woods winning a golf tournament.
This is Terry's second Super Bowl. I'm sure you are as happy and proud about this accomplishment as I am. Especially
since the Steelers will benefit from his ability to run a smooth and fair game.
JW
JW,
He did a great job.

Clark Griffith
When Clark Griffith took over as manager of the Senators in 1912, he also bought a 10 percent interest in the team. In
1919, Griffith joined forces with Philadelphia grain broker William Richardson to buy controlling interest in the Senators.
Griffith boosted his share to 19 percent, while Richardson bought a 40 percent interest. Richardson reached an
agreement with Griffith that allowed Griffith to speak for both of their interests. This all but assured his election as team
president that November. At the same time, the Senators' home park, National Park, was renamed Griffith Stadium.
Griffith stepped down as manager after the 1920 season to devote all his energy to the front office. Clark Griffith had a
sister who married a Mr. Robertson. Mr. Robertson died young in 1912 but not before he had 6 kids..
- Clark adopted nephew Calvin and his sister Thelma.... they became Griffiths
-Mildred , Sherry (Roosevelt all met), Jimmy and Billy remained Robertsons.
-Mildred married then Senators mgr. Joe Cronin
-Sherry played 10 yrs for the Senators and then went into the front office.
-Jimmy and Billy ran the concessions at Griffith stadium.
-Thelma married a 14yr mlb vet with the Senators and W Sox ...Joe
Haynes ....Haynes also went into the Senators front office.
-Calvin having started as a batboy......succeeded Clark as Senators
owner 1955-1984
Dear Dan,
It was Clark’s wife’s Addie’s sister, Anne, who was married to their father who was from Canada. Sherry ended his
playing career with the Philadelphia Athletics then went to the Nats front office. Clark Griffith sold his ranch in Montana
and used the sale money to buy into the Nats. Clark lived at 4720 16th Street NW in DC and attended Hamline
Methodist Church at 16th and Allison Streets NW DC across Allison Street from Maryland Trade Ambassador Phil
Kapneck’s house where he grew up.

Bill,
The 2009 season starts here in Daytona this Saturday with the always exciting first race – the Bud Shootout. We will be
looking for Donnie Neuenberger and his Nationwide Series team to hopefully qualify for their first race of the season on
Valentine’s Day, February 14th. The Daytona 500 will run on Sunday, the 15th. We understand also that Danica
Patrick and her four driver team for the Rolex 24 hour finished the race which is a “feat accompli” in itself since most
drivers did not.
Blessing and love to all,
Dale
Dale,
Thanks for the information.

BASEBALL NOTES............
I am starting to like the Orioles chances of moving up at least a notch this season. Rich Hill who they traded for (from
the Cubs) could be a real steal. Josh Fogg is going back to the Rockies. I like the Orioles new man Ty Wigginton he
should be a real plus for them.
John Parrish is back with the Orioles and could be a starter for them.
Scott Olsen gets a one year 2.8 million from the Nats but thus far the Nats have been unable to sign Ryan Zimmerman
or Josh Willingham. The Nats have the number one pick in the amateur draft but may not be able to sign the player they
want.
George Sherrill gets a one year 2.75 million from the Orioles. Who will be the first manager fired in the 2009 season?
Tom Gordon goes from the Phillies to Arizona. Ryan Howard re-ups with the Phillies for mucho dinero.
