The Fourth of July, Independence Day, what does it mean to you? I hope everyone remembers what Independence Day mean to us, the entire US all 50 states, the entire Country. We have our freedom and the freedom to worship any religion and no other Country has the same freedom as we do. Take time on the 4th to stand up for America!
On a lighter side we have always enjoyed the fireworks and I remember in 1945 going to the monument grounds in D.C. to watch the fireworks and a military display of weapons that were used in World War II, later I saw fireworks in the Baltimore Harbor from the World Trade Center at a party hosted by then Secretary of Transportation, Jim Lighthiser. I also went on former Delegate, the late Ray Huff’s boat and watched fireworks from the Inner Harbor.
I remember holiday doubleheaders on the 4th of July.
Some of the other things I remember from my early days are: Good Humor trucks, policeman walking beats in neighborhoods, also the Philapino yoyo man (doing the walk-a-dog, hesitation and other tricks and selling the super yoyo’s), the photo man with the pony who would take your picture on the pony for a price, the ice truck delivering ice, the coal man delivering coal, Chesnut Farm dairy and Thompson Dairy trucks delivering milk in glass bottles topped with cream. Cleaning went to Rudolph Cleaners, laundry to Chows Laundry, Shefferin’s News stands (where I first got the Sporting News), death balls at the Little Tavern. Going to the movies (Avenue Grand, Penn, Tivoli, Savoy, York, Kennedy, Sheridan (I went there on my first date with Jeanette Bode), Takoma Academy, Ambassador, Bethesda, Silver) and the downtown movies (Capital, Palace, Trans-Lux, Pix Metropolitian, Earle/Warner, Dupont). Oh well enough of that now we get to the “Battle of the Beltway” scores: Orioles 11 Nats 1 Orioles 6 Nats 3 Orioles 3 Nats 5
Why is Ronnie Belliard still in the majors? Why is Manny Acta still managing the Nats?
It’s starting the mid season trade market, the Indians Mark DeRosa (an infielder who can play 2B, SS, 3B) was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals and the Indians may deal pitcher Cliff Lee to the Dodgers. The Oriole may send George Sherrill to a contender. The Yankees will be active in the market, the Mets could end up with Aaron Harang and they might end up with Adam Dunn if the Nats deal him. The Yankees did get Eric Hinske from the Pirates.
I hear the Nats and their number one draft pick Steve Srasberg aren’t even close. The Nats made some moves – sending Dukes to Triple A so much for your super outfielder Len, traded Lastings Milledge and Joel Harahan to the Pirates for Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett. Burnett appeared in 56 games last season for the Pirates, sent pitcher Shairon Martis to Triple A.
Against the Red Sox the Orioles lost to them 4-0 in the first game then in the second the Sox jumped to a 10-1 lead, then started laughing at the Orioles, goofing around on the field and in the dugout and the Orioles came back to win 11-10 with Tony Franconia managing like Manny Acta, in game three the Orioles blew a 5-1 lead then lost in extra innings to the Sox 6-5. The umpiring in this one was terrible for both sides. It looked like the Umps didn’t know a strike zone. Bad, non- producing players get sent to the minors, bad managers get fired, why doesn’t the same rule apply to umpires? Its time for the major leagues to start cracking down on bad umpires.
The other day when the New York Mets were playing the Brewers the Mets looked like baseballs version of the keystone Kops.
The Orioles come into the July 4th weekend with a 35-43 record and a chance for a 60 win season. The Nats come into the weekend with a 22-54 record with a slight chance to win 40 games this season.
I just can’t believe the Learners, Stan Kasten and anyone in the Nats organization can really believe Manny Acta is a big league manager! Wake up!
July is a good time to honor women who give a good everyday effort to make this Country great like Kathy Ireland, Carrie Prejean, Carole West Cullimane, Dale Poole Sawyer, Norman Coffam, Michelle Borquez, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Anne Sumpleoc, Sarah Palin, my singing nuns Barbi and Debbie, Mary Conroy, June Coates Sumner, Margot Lusby, Joan Gray Rhodes, Sheila Hixson, Sam Triandos, Joanne Norden, and to all the women of this world who have and are making an effort for women. Have a Blessed and Happy Fourth of July!
STEVENSON UNIVERISTY TO START FOOTBALL
Last week Stevenson Athletic Director, Brett Adams said Stevenson will start this year and then in 2010 start with a full division three program. Stevenson is the former Villa Julie College and is a favorite of former State Delegate Tim Maloney.
I recommend John Hopkins offensive line coach, Nick Schlorder, Jr. for the head coach and the man to put it all together for Stevenson.
DC DIVAS WIN
The D.C. Divas beat the Pittsburgh Passion 27-17 to advance to face the Boston Milita in Boston on July 11th with the winner going to the IWFL championship game in Austin, Texas on July 25th.

SOUTHERN MARYLAND BLUE CRABS TO HONOR MICHAEL JACKSON
Baseball Club Will Hold A Michael Jackson Tribute Night In Honor Of The Late King Of Pop
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will host a Michael Jackson Tribute Night on Monday, July 6 at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland, as they take on the Lancaster Barnstormers at 7:05 p.m. The Blue Crabs’ fans and staff will use the game as a means of honoring and remembering the late performer, with Michael Jackson themed promotions (best moonwalk anyone?) before the game as well as between innings.
There will be several chances for fans to be a part of the festivities. In addition to promotions during the game, the tribute will begin as soon as fans arrive at the ballpark.
The first 100 fans to enter Regency Furniture Stadium Monday night will receive just one complimentary batting glove, and anyone with the name Billy Jean who wishes to take in the ballgame on July 6 will be admitted free of charge. (Proper ID required.) “Billy Jean” was one of Michael Jackson’s biggest hits as a solo artist and helped catapult him to international stardom.
Also, any person with Jackson as a first, middle or last name that comes to Regency Furniture Stadium will receive a free ticket to the game as well. (Proper ID required.)
At the age of five, Michael Jackson and siblings Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Marlon became famous as the Jackson Five playing through towns in Indiana before three national tours and one international tour. In honor of the Jackson Five, where Michael first hit stardom as the lead singer, the Blue Crabs will give all parties of five or more people attending the game a free upgrade in seating location upon entering the stadium.
To keep with the theme of the night, Michael Jackson’s music will be played at the stadium throughout the game between innings.
“I think it’s safe to say we expect a Thriller between the Blue Crabs and Barnstormers on July 6,” said Blue Crabs Assistant General Manager Omar Roque, and a noted Michael Jackson enthusiast.
For more information about Michael Jackson tribute night on July 6, and to purchase tickets, please call 301-638-9788 or visit the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs online at www.somdbluecrabs.com.

SPORTS NOTES
The Washington Capitals picked Swede forward Marcus Johansson in the first round of the NHL. There was a big NHL trade made on draft day and for great coverage of the NHL draft and other hockey news go to Ed Frankovic’s blog on WNST.net.
Happy Birthday to Tommy Harris his birthday was June 29th. Tommy played on some good Theodore Roosevelt (DC) HS basketball teams with Bobby Cooper, Jack Ellis, Eddie Graham, Walt “Abe” Vollmack, Zeke Zimmerman, and Al Tuma and in 1949-50 they were coached by Gabe Fergassi.
Brazil came from behind to beat the USA 3—2 in the soccer cup.
I wonder where they are today----Anne Gentry, Susan Cowell, Elaine Goodman, Carolyn Briggs, Joe Eller, Kelli Ellis, Michelle Collins, Virginia Duke Jacobs, Jim King, Carolyn Watson, Betty Lee Kelly, Jim Albee, Brian Unger, Betty Wigglesworth Hughes, Frank Pastor, and Martha Thomas.
Bowie High School grad Brian Ellerbe and former Loyola (MD) College and Michigan U. men’s basketball coach has joined the George Washington University men’s basketball program as an assistant coach to Karl Hobbs, could Ellerbe be auditioning for Hobbs job?
William and Mary is changing their mascots and I am nominating the “Peanut” (because Virginia is a peanut state and they could dress the mascot up as “Mr. Planters Peanut”) and probably get some sponsorship from Planters.
Rick Mahorn is the new coach of the4 WNBA Detroit.
Deepest sympathy goes to the families of the following:
Ralph Joseph DeLaVergne (grad of Gonzaga College HS). Carole Anne Joyce Finnin (graduate of the Academy of Holy Names). Mikki Wilkins (daughter of IBF President Marian W. Muhammad). Francis Moyers (graduate Richard Montgomery HS). Jacob Richard Jacobsonn (Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS grad). Karl Malden (great Oscar winning actor). Alexis Arguello (World boxing champion in 3 different weight classes, his record was 82-8/65 KO’s). Gale Storm (great TV and movie actress, remember TV “Little Margie”). Charley Taylor (great local singer who graduated from Oxon Hill, sang with Joe Saitta and the Second Coming band). I asked a couple of locals about him and here’ s what they had to say: John Linthicum (owner of Gus and John’s popular nite club in Camp Springs ---Sorry to hear this Bill, I knew Charlie well and they played once with us. But later on he hung out at Theismann’s on Allentown Road, great talent and liked a lot. Saw him originally I believe at a club on Wisconsin Ave., I think it was the Bastille, Pete Bouinis owned it and later he came to Florida in the late 70’s and had Pete & Lenny with a great operator Lenny Boyer who owned the Paddock in Ocean City originally, and they rocked in Ocean City. The Second Coming had a great following and Charlie was a very good vocalist. Lou Martin-popular lead singer of the Memories says---Bill, yes, we did some gigs together (being on the same show or performing at the same clubs) in the early sixties. Charlie never actually sang with The Memories. You have to understand that they were a top forties band and we were, and still are, an oldies group. We were just a bit luckier than they were because we had signed with a major record label and had a couple of moderately successful hit records. Still, Charlie and Joe continued on and were pretty darn good at what they did. Charlie had a great voice and really loved performing music. He was also a lot of fun to watch on stage. He was one of the good guys!! The Second Coming, was part of a group of performers from the Washington DC area who were loaded with talent and gave the metro area music scene patrons a musical show not available in most areas of the country at that time. By the way, how is your health? I hope you are listening to your doc's.
Archie DeVino (1944 New Jersey State Amateur boxing champion, a pro contender for the bantamweight and featherweight championships, fought 11 times as a pro in Madison Square Garden, record as pro was 44-11-3).
Frank Shore reports on the passing of one of his friends Daniel “The Mc Kinley Clipper” Boccabella who got his nickname from Joe “The Yankee Clipper” DiMaggio both wore number 5 and played center field. Boccabella also was a DC Metro policeman for 20 years and he played with Shore when Tech lost to Western and Bobby Lomax at Griffith Stadium.
James Pinckney Tillman Sr. (former Washington Homestead Gray player and a member of Negro League Legends Hall of Fame, also an Armstrong (DC) HS grad).
Jean Thompson Ferguson (graduate of Central (DC) HS and a member of the family that owned Thompsons Dairy in DC).
Billy Mays (TV pitchman known for his loud aggressive sales pitch for Oxi-Clean commercials).
WE GET LETTERS…..
Bill, Not often that you make mistakes in your predictions but you took your medicine and swallowed it like the class act you are. Wish our Florida Marlins could pick it up like the Nats and O's have been doing. Good news for our Orlando Magic fans - we got Vince Carter, Mainland HS grad (Daytona Beach) but we do not get to keep the Turk who was so great in the championships for us. Tom Harris (Roosevelt class of 50) had a birthday coming up on June 29th. College World Series championship game this week was the best baseball I have seen in a long time. #3 LSU Tigers pulled off a spectacular win over #1 Texas Longhorns. Almost as good as the championship game in DC when Eastern HS Ramblers won the city championship over Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Who of your readers remembers that one? 1952 I think, Dan Morrison would know. Wish I had gotten this good stuff to you before the column came out today, sorry about that. Donnie Neuenberger will be going in the Nationwide Race in Daytona this weekend. Thanks for my hometown connection and blessings to you and yours, Dale
Bill, Alex is doing just fine. Going into his junior year and they have him starting at cornerback because of his speed. Russell my grandson who just graduated from Arizona State was hired by the Navy (DOD). My youngest grandson who will be 17 just completed a football camp and came out #1 in QB. Hoping he will be the starter at Northeast high in the very tough 5-A division where if you win you ultimately play St. Thomas Aquinas as Alex did. Believe they were named #1 in the country this past year and always are around the top 5. So thanks for asking, all is well and thankful they all are doing well. J.
Dear John, Great report, good luck and have a Blessed and Happy 4th of July to you and all. Bill
Bill, You are “with it”. I’m proud of you bashing Baltimore’s GM and manager. As you said, season is not over. After all you are a native Washingtonian and should be for the Nats over the Orioles. I love the Nats and anyone who beats the Orioles. GO NATS, and if they don’t I’m still rooting for them every year. Marlene
Bill, Stand by your convictions when you beat down on the NOTS. If it looks and smells like a .300 team....IT IS a .300 team. So what if they have a 5-5 , Last 10..... It is not going to change the spots on this lizzard. Get back to me if / when they SIGN Strasburg..... that would be the 1st thing this ownership will have ever done to improve this Keystone franchise. Respectfully, Danny Morrison
