McCAFFREY’S WORLD
By
Bill McCaffrey

Excitement returns to “Angelos Yard”, yes that’s right excitement.  Oh that’s right Matt Wieters has come to the Yard, fans are coming back and lighting up the
boards of Baltimore sports talk shows.  Yes the Baltimore fair weather fans are back and Harpo Marx is the leading cheerleader.

June Swoon?  Two straight losses to Seattle is the start of the “swoon”?

Even DC had some excitement but alas it was not the Nationals that provided it, it was Randy Johnson’s 300th career major league win.  I watched it on TV but you
know to me I couldn’t understand why more fans didn’t show up at Nationals Park.  Yes I know it was a cold windy day and night but when only 300 are in the park
even tho they had about 3,000 when the second game started.

Other than the Randy Johnson 300th win it’s been gloomy and dark in D.C. baseball, they nailed Randy St. Claire (Nats pitching coach) and gave him a bus ticket out
of D.C.  I wonder who will be next?  It should be Manny Acta, who has to be the worse manager in baseball.

It’s great that the Nationals are naming their home team TV booth in honor of Bob Wolf (great sports announcer and person) but what about Arch McDonald?  Radio
booth maybe for Arch?

Well it looks like the Nats will lose many more games than the Orioles and at this time I am going to share a letter which I received from Dan Morrisson.

Remember Brinkleys’ Guys and the Roundup on 8th Street SE?  I bet if they are still there a lot of Nats fans sneak out early from Nats games.  The Nats have the 1st
and 10th pick in Saturday’s June 6th baseball draft.  There is no assurance if the Nats draft Stephen Strasburg that he will sign with them.  The Orioles have the 5th
pick in the draft.

Tom Glavine was released by the Braves.

THE GOLDEN WIETERS HAS BEEN FOUND!

David Miller of Crofton, Md., found the Golden Wieters the morning of Friday May, 29.  The one-of-a-kind bobble head doll was hiding between shelves at the Bowie
branch of Prince George's County Memorial Library System.

After three weeks, six clues and two trips to the library, Miller claimed his Matt Wieters prize pack.  His detective skills earned him a non-golden Matt Wieters bobble
head doll, a Wieters T-shirt, a baseball signed by the switch-hitting catcher and a ceremonial first pitch.

Miller found the Golden Wieters on his own.  "It was a one-man operation.  The clue about Matt Wieters valuing a good education led me to the library."

The Baysox had a lot of fun with the Search For The Golden Wieters.  The team plans on staging another scavenger hunt in Anne Arundel County in June.  The Anne
Arundel Search For The Golden Wieters will be announced on www.baysox.com.

THUNDER QUIETS BAYSOX OFFENSE

Three Trenton pitchers kept the Baysox in check as the Thunder shut out Bowie 2-0 Monday night. Third baseman Miguel Abreu had two hits and John Mariotti
allowed only one earned run, but the Baysox could not muster any offense against Trenton right-hander Josh Schmidt in the first start of his career.

Trenton got on the board in the second inning as Mariotti struggled to find the plate. With two outs and a runner on first, Kyle Anson singled to put runners on first
and second with two outs. Mariotti walked Marcos Vechionacci to load the bases and James Cooper drew a free pass to drive in the first run of the game for the
Thunder.

They would add another run in the fourth thanks to a defensive miscue by the Baysox. With one out, Noah Hall grounded a ball to new Baysox second baseman
Rodolfo Cardona who threw the ball away allowing Hall to advance to second. Anson followed with an RBI single to put the Thunder on top 2-0. Mariotti would finish
his night after 6.1 innings, allowing two runs (1 ER) run on six hits while walking five and striking out two. The five walks were the most by a Baysox starter this
season and raises his total to 18 in 27.2 innings of work on the year.

Baysox left-hander Ryan Rodriguez came on for Mariotti with one out in the seventh, working 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. In his last three outings, Rodriguez has
held his opponent scoreless through 7.2 innings of work, striking out five and walking one.

Schmidt was in control as the Baysox hitters were unable to put together anything offensively. The Thunder right-hander was making his first start of his five-year
professional career. He worked 5.0 innings, allowing two hits while walking one and striking out two. It was also the first time he has worked more than 3.2 innings in
game over 159 career appearances.

Trenton Left-hander Michael Dunn came on in the sixth inning and shut the Baysox down in 3.0 innings of relief, allowing only one hit. Right-hander Amaury Sanit
came on in the ninth to close out the win, working around a hit and a walk while striking out two to earn his sixth save of the season. The loss drops the Baysox to 25-
23 on the season, 6.5 games behind Eastern League South leader Akron.

BLUE CRABS RE-SIGN JOHN RAMISTELLA

Outfielder Re-signs With The Blue Crabs For A Second Season

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs made a key early season acquisition with the re-signing of John Ramistella on Sunday. The outfielder is entering his second season
with the Blue Crabs after playing with the organization last season. In 2008, Ramistella played in 129 games for the Blue Crabs. He hit .276 with 15 homeruns and 67
RBI. He drew 71 walks and had 14 stolen bases.

The 27 year-old from Monterey, California native rejoins the Blue Crabs after completing his college semester. Ramistella had to complete college this year as part of
his original contract with the New York Yankees. Part of the contract was that the Yankees would pay for his college as long as it was completed by Spring of 2009,
even if he was no longer apart of the organization. He was drafted in 2000 by the Yankees in the 35th round.

In 104 games over 2 seasons in the Yankees’ system, Ramistella hit .256 with 8 homeruns and 47 RBI. He also had a stint with the Florida Marlin’s minor league
system in 2004.

Ramistella came to the Blue Crabs in 2008 as part of the migration of players who came with Manager Butch Hobson from the 2007 Can-Am Champion Nashua Pride.
In one season with Nashua, he hit .272 with 11 homeruns and 45 RBI in 89 games.

His best professional season came with the Chillicothe Paints of the Frontier League in 2005. He hit .317 with 20 homeruns and 73 RBI in 94 games. Ramistella also
had 32 stolen bases and drew 42 walks. In 2006 with the Paints, he had 41 stolen bases and hit .283.

Ramistella had two walks and two runs scored on Sunday against the Bridgeport Bluefish in his first game back with the Blue Crabs. On Monday night, Ramistella hit a
three-run homerun to push the Blue Crabs to a 7-4 win over York.

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7, York Revolution 4

Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland

The Blue Crabs looked to erase a three game losing streak coming into tonight’s series opener with the York Revolution.

The Revolution took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. York had a two RBI single from Matt Rogelstad. Later in the inning, Blue Crabs pitcher Ryan Bicondoa
walked home a run.

Southern Maryland (22-14) got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a Richard Giannotti sacrifice fly to deep center field that scored Jeremy Owens from third
base.

York (10-25) added a run in the sixth inning and it looked as if the Blue Crabs would drop their fourth straight as they struggled against York starting pitcher Corey
Thurman.

Thurman finished with one earned run allowed in seven innings. He allowed only three hits and had three strikeouts.

However, York decided to go to the bullpen, with David Shafer, in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shafer walked two straight to lead off the inning and was pulled for
Travis Hughes.

The Blue Crabs already had one run off an RBI single by Giannotti in the eighth when John Ramistella stepped up and smashed a monster three-run homerun over the
left field wall to give the Crabs a 5-4 lead.

Travis Garcia added some insurance later in the inning with his own two-run homerun, also over the left field wall.
Jim Ed Warden came in and closed the game out in the ninth with a one-two-three inning to secure the win for the Blue Crabs, 7-4. For Warden it was his 10th save,
which ties him with Travis Minix of Somerset for the league high.

Matt Hensley got the win for the Blue Crabs and improves to 4-1. Warren picked up his tenth save of the season. Hughes picked up the loss for York.

Bicondoa received no decision on seven innings pitched and four earned runs allowed.

DIVAS BEAT FIREBIRDS 42-0 !

The Divas third trip to Philadelphia in team history ended with a convincing win over the Firebirds.

Defensive Back Kathryn Hemlock picked off a pass on the Firebirds first possession and Wide Receiver Tara Stephenson added a 19 yard rushing TD to put the Divas
up 7-0. Hemlock had a perfect night with 6 extra points kicked and she also added two interceptions.

Running Back Okiima Pickett continued her strong rushing efforts with a 10 yard scamper to give the Divas a 14-0 lead. The Divas third possession saw Quarterback
Allyson Hamlin connect twice with Wide Receiver Nikki Williams, including for a 9-yard touchdown, and the Divas were up 21-0 to end the first quarter.

Hamlin then began the first drive of the second quarter by finding Wide Receiver Tara Stephenson for a 16 yard strike to make it 28-0. Defensive End Sharina Western
recovered a fumble on the ensuing possession and Running Back Okiima Pickett did the rest. Her 4 carries for 37 yards on the drive ended with a 13 yard Touchdown
behind a great effort by the offensive line.

Head Coach Keith Howard remarked "I'm proud of the way we competed and it was good to get the win. We have to work on getting less penalties and keeping our
focus on our next opponent."

The Divas are now 6-0 on the year and return home to face the N.Y. Sharks on June 6th with a 7:00pm kickoff. The Divas are currently ranked number 1 in the
Massey ratings which determine the playoff seeds and home field advantage.

REGENCY FURNITURE STADIUM TO HOST WORLD CLASS SOCCER

London’s Storied Crystal Palace Football Club to Play Exhibition Match July 13

Match to be Nationally Televised by Fox Sports

The Charles County Commissioners, in conjunction with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs minor league baseball team announced today that Regency Furniture
Stadium in Waldorf has been selected to host one of two 2009 exhibition matches to be played in the United States by London England’s Crystal Palace Football Club.
The match will be played Monday evening, July 13 at 8 p.m. against Crystal Palace Baltimore, the U.S. based affiliate of the parent club, and will be televised nationally
by Fox Soccer Channel, part of the Fox Sports Network.

“Hosting an international event, like Crystal Palace exhibition Football in our stadium is yet another milestone for Charles County and further demonstrates our stadium
is realizing the potential we only dreamed of just a few short years ago,” said Charles County Commissioner President Wayne Cooper.

“The potential economic boost from an event like this couldn't come at a better time. We look forward to showcasing our stadium, and Charles County, to a whole
new audience of sports enthusiasts,” added Cooper.

In order to host the match, the entire infield will be laid with sod.  The field will run parallel to the first base side of the playing field.

“The Blue Crabs will be on the road July 9 to 16, and we will take advantage of this configuration by having soccer clinics and other soccer related events scheduled
around the professional match”, said Blue Crabs General Manager Chris Allen. “The match will be followed by a spectacular fireworks display to cap off the evening,”
added Allen.

This event is another demonstration of the multiple uses for Regency Furniture Stadium.  Last year, the stadium hosted three major concert events (REO Speedwagon,
Kool & The Gang and the “Country Jam” featuring Gary Allan), and it’s slated to host two more concerts this year (T-Pain & FloRida and Trace Adkins).  The facility

Crystal Palace Football Club (UK) was founded in 1905 in south London and was a founding member of the English Premier League. The Club is currently a member
of The Football League Championship, and plays its home matches at historic Selhurst Park which opened in 1924. Crystal Palace UK chairman, Simon Jordan, saw
an opportunity not only to develop the footprint of Crystal Palace worldwide, but more specifically to tap into the under-appreciated pool of American soccer talent.
This vision has lead to periodic tours of the United States, and in 2006 a U.S. affiliate was created in Baltimore. The U.S. club is a member of the United Soccer
Leagues and also competes in the U.S. Open Cup, a 100-year old event, playing against competition such as the D.C. United, New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles
Galaxy. Under the affiliation arrangement between the two Crystal Palace clubs, some players from the English club have played in Baltimore, and several senior and
youth players from Crystal Palace Baltimore have spent time training in London with the English team.
