McCAFFREY’S WORLD
By
Bill McCaffrey

Finally the Baltimore Orioles are bringing up the much heralded Matt Wieters to take over the catching duties for the Orioles.  It’s coming at a good time with the
Orioles hot winning five out of their last six games including a sweep of the slumping, bad looking Toronto Blue Jays.  The Orioles are hosting the Detroit Tigers this
weekend.

The Blue Jays really look bad in the Orioles sweep and one that looked really bad was former Oriole closer and now Blue Jay closer B.J. Ryan.

In the loss game race the Orioles had 26 and the Nats 33 coming into this Thursday’s games.

The coming of Wieters should help the Orioles on the field and at the gate.  Luke Scott homered in his coming off the DL.  Scott along with Mora, Jones, Markakis,
Roberts, and the addition of Wieters makes the team very strong offensive.

I don’t know why they waste any on Pie.

If the Orioles had the pitchers the Nats have I think they could move up.

Ex-Terp Eric Milton is making a strong return with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Manny Acta has to be the luckiest manager in the majors, he should have been given a bus ticket out of D.C. many moons ago.

Joe Angel sounds just like Jon Miller.

You know what disgusts me at sporting events some in attendance do not take their hats off or cross their hearts with their right hand during the playing of the
“National Anthem” and “God Bless America” I think it’s a sign of disrespect to our Country.

The only thing I saw that was positive with the Blue Jays was Kevin Millar who is a plus in the hitting department for them as well as being a leader in the clubhouse.

Does Kris Benson’s wife still live in the Baltimore area?

Whatever happened to the Annapolis wiffleball league?

When are the Nats and Orioles going to start looking like fundamental sound major league teams?  Probably never until both teams get new managers.

Major league umpires are doing below average umpiring this season.

Daniel Cabrera never could find a home in the B-W area just like he could never find home plate when he was pitching, he was sent packing by the Nats this past week.

Japanese pitcher Koji Ushara went on the Orioles 15 day DL list.

Mark Teixeira is blazing and now has 15 home runs for the Yankees.

The Orioles beat the Tigers 5-1 Thursday night.

INTERESTING E-MAIL

I received a very interesting e-mail from a good friend, Shelton Meade, and I thought I would share it with you.

Bill,
Don't forget the Merchant Marine ships.  My dad was killed on the John Harvey on Dec 2, 1943 in Bari, Italy.  I was born on March 18, 1944.   Below are some links
to the historic Chemical Disaster at Bari.  --- Interesting reading.  My family didn't know who my Dad was killed and what truly went on at Bari until 1998 after US
Govt released the facts and books were written.  I friend of mine found a book telling all in a used book store and gave it to me.  I then copied it and sent to my Mom,
and my Dad's brothers and sisters.
Note:  Merchant Marines (1941-45) were not allowed to join VFW or American Legions from 1945 -1988, they were NOT considered vets.  Law changed now
considered Vets as Members of Coast Guardsmen.  A little late since most are dead.

Subject: WWII disaster at Bari, Italy 1943
Here is a link to the WWII chemical disaster at Bari, Italy:
http://fhp.osd.mil/CBexposures/ww2mustard.jsp
E-Mail I sent my family on 5/25/09
This morning some other HOG members & I rode our motorcycles down to the Memorial Day service in Rocky Mount (although not quite a Rolling Thunder).  There
I talked to a former WWII Merchant Marine who is now a retired Air Force General that spoke at the service.  I thanked him for including the Merchant Marines in his
talk because they are usually left out of Memorial Day services.  He agreed with me.  When I told him my dad was a Merchant Marine that was killed in Bari, Italy in
Dec 1943 and that I was born in March 1944, he said he remembered the Bari chemical disaster (known as the Little Pearl Harbor) and we then both cried & hugged.
Missed Rolling Thunder but what a day!
I also found out today that the Merchant Marines serving overseas in WWII from 1941-1945 were finally designated as veterans under the US Coast Guard.  http:

DIVAS WIN THE BATTLE OF THE BELTWAY 70-14

The D.C. Divas started the day with a tough defensive series followed by a 30 yd punt return by Kathryn Hemlock. Two plays later RB Okiima Pickett’s 2 yd run gave
the Divas a 7-0 lead. 3 of Pickett’s first 4 carries went for touchdowns. Her second saw her sprint 35 yards and Kathryn Hemlock added the extra point to put the
Divas up 14-0. Baltimore scored to close the contest to 14-6 and then Pickett pounced on the Nighthawks defense with a 65 yard touchdown run. WR Tara
Stephenson added the 2pt run and the score was 22-6 Divas. The Divas fourth offensive possession was capped by a 12 yd catch and run from WR Tara Kallal which
made it 29-6. Kathryn Hemlock kicked the extra point and then on the next series intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards to set up RB LaShawn Foust whose 12
yd run gave the Divas a 36-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Divas would score on 8 of their first 9 possessions of the game. QB Allyson Hamlin added the
first tally of the second quarter with a 17 yd scramble and a 42-7 lead. Hamlin then threw her second touchdown of the game with a 40 yd strike to WR Tara
Stephenson and it was 49-6. The final score of the first half was another great effort by the offensive line and RB Tiffany Matthews. Her 20 yard touchdown run
along with the extra point by Kathryn Hemlock gave the Divas 56 points which sets a team record for the most points scored in one half in the team’s 9 year history.
Hemlock added to the second half scoring with an electrifying 50 yard punt return to make it 63-6 Divas. The Divas defense was strong all night with 3 interceptions
and a defensive stand that lead to a muffed punt by the Nighthawks as the 3rd quarter came to an end. The Divas offense took the ball at the 2 yard line and RB
Rachelle Pecovsky punched it in to put the Divas up 70-6. Baltimore added a touchdown and 2 pt conversion has time expired to end the game 70-14 Divas. The Divas
are currently 5-0 and ranked number one in the Massey ratings which are used by the IWFL to determine the playoff seeds. The Divas travel to Philadelphia next
weekend to take on the Firebirds in a 6:00pm kickoff.

BAYSOX RALLY PAST CURVE

A furious seven run rally over the final three innings was the key to overcoming early mistakes as the Baysox defeated the Curve 7-3 Wednesday morning in Altoona.
Starter John Mariotti allowed three unearned runs in the first inning thanks in part to two Baysox errors, but was bailed out by an offense that led the team to their
fourth straight win.

Altoona got a chance early when Brian Friday reached on an error by third baseman Michael Costanzo to start the bottom of the first inning. Jim Negrych grounded
into a fielders’ choice one batter later to erase Friday at second, but the extra out proved costly. Jonel Pacheco singled to put runners at first and second. Jason
Delaney followed with an RBI single, advancing when the ball went under the glove of center fielder Danny Figueroa to put runners on second and third. Jeff
Corsaletti singled to score Pacheco from third, and Delaney scored on a passed ball by Baysox catcher Guillermo Rodriguez to make the score 3-0 after one.

Three unearned runs were all Mariotti would allow, as he worked around four walks over his final five innings while only allowing one more hit. His counterpart,
Curve right-hander Brad Lincoln, continued to hold the offense in check after tossing a complete game shutout against the Baysox in his last outing. In today’s
contest, Lincoln went 6.0 shutout innings allowing four hits while walking one and striking out five.

After Lincoln left the game, Baysox hitters were finally able to find some success against Altoona right-hander Jeff Sues in the top of the seventh. Figueroa doubled
with one out, scoring on an RBI single by Rodriguez to cut the Altoona deficit to two. Sues allowed a leadoff walk to left fielder Jonathan Tucker in the eighth before
being replaced by closer Jean Machi. First baseman Brandon Snyder drew a walk to put the tying run aboard with nobody out. Costanzo followed with an RBI single,
plating Tucker and moving Snyder over to third. Second baseman Miguel Abreu grounded to third, but Snyder got caught in a run down for the first out of the inning.
Figueroa came through again, driving an RBI single to left to plate Costanzo and tie the game at three apiece. Figueroa would finish the afternoon 4-5 with two doubles
and an RBI and is now 7-for-12 since coming off the Disabled List on May 23.

Left-hander Ryan Rodriguez set the Curve down in order in the eighth and the Baysox exploded in the ninth against Curve righty Joshua Hill. Designated hitter Dave
Krynzel singled to start the inning, but was erased at second as Tucker’s bunt attempt resulted in a force at second. After Snyder singled to put runners on first and
second, Costanzo came through in the clutch again as he laced a double into right field which scored Tucker and put the Baysox on top 4-3. One batter later, right
fielder Joe Nowicki put the game out of reach with a towering three run homer on the first pitch he saw from Hill. The blast was Nowicki’s fourth of the season,
three of which have come in the seventh inning and beyond as the young outfielder is quickly earning a reputation for the big hit.

Rodriguez came back on to close it out in the ninth, earning his first win of the season. The Baysox left-hander has adjusted well to a recent change in his mechanics
and has now held his opponent scoreless in 6.0 innings over his last two appearances.

The Baysox moved to a season high three games over .500 at 23-20 for the season.

BLAME IT ON THE RAIN: BLUE CRABS AND REVOLUTION SCHEDULE DOUBLEHEADER

Southern Maryland & York Will Make Up Rained Out Game June 2 At Regency Furniture Stadium

Due to persistent rain showers from May 3 through 7, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and York Revolution were only able to play three games of a scheduled four
game series at York’s Sovereign Bank Stadium during those dates.  The teams and the Atlantic League announced plans today to make up the game.

Because the Atlantic League’s first half ends before Southern Maryland visits York again, the game will be made up at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf,
Maryland, home of the Blue Crabs.

The Revolution are scheduled to come to Southern Maryland next from June 1-3, originally a three game series that is now four games.  On Tuesday, June 2 the
teams will play a doubleheader, and both games will be seven innings long.  (Atlantic League rules for a doubleheader.)  Southern Maryland will be the home team for
both games.

Game one of the doubleheader on June 2 will begin at 6:05 p.m., and the gates at Regency Furniture Stadium will open at 5 p.m.  The season ticket holder gates will
open at 4:45 p.m.  There will be an approximate 20 to 30 minute intermission in between the two games.

For more information on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, including ticket options for June 2 or any other home game at Regency Furniture Stadium, please visit

HERRERA HALTS STREAKING BAYSOX

Altoona right-hander Yoslan Herrera tossed six shutout innings as the Curve downed the Baysox, 3-1 Thursday morning. Jake Arrieta got through five innings
unscathed but a wild pitch and an RBI single in the sixth inning by Jonel Pacheco would prevent him from earning his fifth win of the season.

Early in the contest, both starters were at the top of their game. The teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when the Curve finally got to the Baysox
right-hander. Arrieta allowed a single to Pedro Lopez to start the inning and Jim Negrych followed with a single of his own. Right fielder Joe Nowicki attempted to
throw out Lopez at third, but Lopez slid in safely and Negrych advanced to second. With Pacheco at the plate, Arrieta uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Lopez and
advancing Negrych to third. Pacheco followed with an RBI single to right later in the at-bat, giving the Curve a two-run advantage. Arrieta got out of the inning with
any further damage, finishing his day after 6.0 innings allowing the two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five.

Back came the Baysox in the top half of the seventh against Altoona reliever Sean Smith. Second baseman Miguel Abreu lined a one out single through the hole at
shortstop and advanced to third when Altoona first baseman Jaime Romak missed the ball on a pickoff attempt. One batter later, center fielder Danny Figueroa reached
on an infield single, scoring Abreu and bringing the Baysox within one. Figueroa has collected a hit in each of his four games since being activated from the disabled
list on May 23, going 8-for-17 in that span.

Altoona added an insurance run in the seventh off Baysox right-hander Ryan Ouellette. Angel Gonzalez reached on a bunt single to second with one out. Lopez
followed one batter later with his third hit of the game, chasing Gonzalez to third to put men on the corners with two out. Negrych singled up the middle to bring
home Gonzalez, and gave Altoona an all important insurance run to make the score 3-1.

After late inning heroics yesterday, the Baysox looked to do the same with a two out rally in the eighth. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker singled and first baseman Brandon
Snyder was hit by a pitch to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of third baseman Michael Costanzo. The rally was not to be as Smith got Costanzo to go
down swinging to end the threat.

Smith stayed on for the ninth, setting the Baysox down in order to snap their four-game winning streak and give the Curve win number 15 on the year. With the loss,
the Baysox drop to 23-21 on the season, 9.0 games back of division leading Akron coming into play Thursday night.

The Baysox head home to begin a quick three-game home stand against the Harrisburg Senators at Prince George’s Stadium. Fans will have a chance to help the
Baysox set a world record by having the most people wear sunglasses at night.

WE GET LETTERS……

Hi Bill,
A few years ago (1979-1981) when I was stationed in England we went to Spain, Portugal and Morocco on a trip. I was with a bus full of Brits. Well the Spanish and
English were having some sort of a fracas and while it did not trouble us, our bus could not get to Gibraltar. The Spanish put up barb wire right thru this beautiful
park. We could see the Union Jack fluttering across the frontier but we could not visit.
I really felt sorry for the Spanish workers who still had jobs and worked on Gibraltar. They had to take a ferry from Spain to Morocco and then get another ferry back
to Gibraltar. Seemed silly to me but Spain permitted that.
I don't know if you are aware but just like Gibraltar is a British base in Spain, the Spanish have a base in Morocco called Cueta. It is part of Spain and forms the other
side of the pillar of Hercules or the mouth to the Mediterranean Sea. Gibraltar is a British enclave on Spanish soil and Ceuta is a Spanish enclave on Moroccan soil.
Cheers Jerry

SPORTS NOTES
I use to like to play slot machines at Marshall Hall, the Wigwam in Waldorf and Beverly Beach, Triton Beach, North Beach, and Harold Harbor.  I had some great times
at Harold Harbor on a few occasions with Bette Dixson.

Northwestern (23-0) defeated North Carolina 21-7 to win their fifth NCAA Women’s lacrosse championship.  Syracuse won the men’s championship with a 10-9
overtime win over Cornell.  It was Syracuse 11th NCAA lacrosse championship.

Are the Capitals really going to lose Sergei Fedorov?  What a mistake that is.

I wonder where they are now:  Dick Chappell, Dwight Saylor, Betty Wigglesworth Hughes, Don Hardesty, Donnie Faulkner, Gerogia Grunwald, Danny Butler, Bette
