MCCAFFREY’S WORLD

                                                                    By

                                                           Bill McCaffrey

People in the Pittsburgh are probably thinking of the Baltimore-Washington area are the chump cities of the East.  The
Pittsburgh Steelers use the Ravens as a drum you beat.  While Penquin fans must feel the same way towards the
Washington Capitals.  It was billed as a series that pitted the two best players against each Sidney Crosby of the Pens
and Alex Ovechkin of the Caps.  It was a classic series with the Caps blowing a 2-0 advantage to drop the final fours
game including the series final 6-2 with Crosby outshining Ovechkin overall.

This season was the highlight of the Caps history and with the talent they have it can only get better for them.  The best
game in the history of the Caps, I think, was the four overtime loss to the Islanders, a great one.  Pittsburgh already
thought “Charm City” is really “Chump City” and I wonder what name they will come up with for Washington.  The Caps
will be back despite what the Harpo Marx hair girl on the so-called best sports radio show in the B-W area says.  Last
week someone called me and said to tune into the Scott Garcau show and I did and man, oh man, if they weren’t in
heated battle over its okay for pro sports players to ease up or not play hard and hustle.  Also who’s to blame for the
Orioles lack of fundamental knowledge of the game.  I don’t know anyone who thinks she deserves to be on the air.
Everyone thinks Debbie Taylor or Amber Theoharis should take her place on the air with Scott.

BASEBALL

The big news in the Washington area was that Ryan Zimmerman’s 30 game hitting streak was over.  Baltimore (20
losses) and Washington (21 losses) are looking past to next weekend for their series at Nationals Park and it should be
a good one despite both teams losing records.  I think the Nats will win next weekend’s series.  Game times at Nats Park
for the Nats-Orioles are 7:05 pm Friday May 23rd and Saturday May 24th and Sunday at 1:35 pm.

Nick Johnson is having a good year for the Nats.  What do Dukes of the Nats and Pie of the Orioles have in common?
Neither can play centerfield.

Dave Trembley and his coaches have to take the blame on the lack of hustle by some of the Orioles and also for the
lack of fundamentals of the players.

Manny Acta of the Nats isn’t much of a manager either.  The stupidity of not having Matt Wieters on the Orioles roster
from the start of the season is really more glowing with the poor play of their catching corps.

Also how many more times are we going to see an Orioles player picked off base?  I like the Nats pitching trio of Jordan
Zimmerman, Shairon Martis and Scott Olson.

Baseball in the B-W area is down unless they are counting empty seats, ushers and the stroll of overpriced cokes, hot
dog vendors who are strolling the stands.

OLD TIMERS BASEBALL

The new officers of the Oldtimers Baseball Association are:
President – Fred Brocklander
First VP – Jim Walczak
Second VP – Jim O’Conner
Third VP – Joe Short
Board of Directors – Pete Hamilton, Joe Posedenti, and Frank Szymanski

From the Associations newsletter and “It’s a Fact” by Howie Meyers, the first AL Oriole to hit .300 was Bob “The Rope”
Boyd.  The highest batting average ever by a major league shortstop was Luke Appling with a .388 batting average ever
for a shortstop.

The 1926 Reading Keystones of the International League went 31-129 for the all time low for games won and lost.

Walter “Big Train” Johnson pitched in 64, 11-0 games in his career winning 38 and losing 26.  All records.  Appling was
known also as “old aches and mains” and also fouling balls until he got one pitch that he liked.

Madonna and directed by Penny Marshall.

BAYSOX ANNOUNCE DOUBLEHEADER AT TRENTON

The Bowie Baysox and Trenton Thunder will play a doubleheader on Tuesday, June 2, to make up May 5 game at
Prince George’s Stadium.  The make up game will take place at Samuel J. Plumeri Sr. Field at Mercer County Waterfront
Park in Trenton, N.J.  The first game will begin at 6:05 p.m. and both games will be seven innings, in accordance with
Minor League Baseball rules.

TUCKER PROVIDES SPARK AS BAYSOX TOPPLE AEROS

Akron, Ohio - Left fielder Jonathan Tucker continued to be a catalyst for the Baysox offense, driving in two runs and
stealing two bases as the Baysox defeated Akron 7-4. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion also had a big night, going 3-5
with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored as the Baysox won their second straight over the division leading Aeros.

Baysox starter Bobby Livingston continued to pitch well, tossing six strong innings allowing two runs on six hits while
walking three and fanning three. The Aeros tallied single runs in the third and fourth innings, but each time Livingston
was able to settle down and control the damage as the offense took control.

Aeros lefty Ryan Edell made his first start of the season in place of Hector Rondon, who was moved to the bullpen
before the game. Edell worked three scoreless innings before Rondon came on in the fourth, but the Eastern League’s
leader in wins struggled to find his niche as a reliever against the Baysox offense.

With one out in the fourth, Concepcion lined a double to center field off Rondon. One batter later, Tucker came through
with his second single of the night, a ground ball back up the middle which plated Concepcion and tied the game at one.
The left fielder followed with his second stolen base of the night, his tenth of the season, which placed him in a tie for
second in the Eastern League.

The offense came calling again in the fifth. Third baseman Melvin Dorta reached on an infield single, advancing to
second on a throwing error by Aeros shortstop Carlos Rivero. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by designated
hitter Paco Figueroa, Dorta scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Brandon Snyder. The RBI was Snyder’s team
leading 21st of the season, he finished the night 2-3 to extend his league leading average to .365 on the season.
Concepcion followed with his second straight double to give the Baysox a chance to take the lead with two out. Second
baseman Miguel Abreu grounded a ball to first, but Beau Mills threw it away allowing Concepcion to score and putting
the Baysox on top 3-2.

The Baysox extended their lead in the seventh against Akron reliever Zach Putnam. Snyder singled to start the frame,
moving to second on a wild pitch. Concepcion followed with a single into center field to score Snyder and give
Concepcion his ninth RBI of the season. After moving to second on a passed ball, Concepcion came around to score on
Jonathan Tucker’s third single of the night to extend the lead to four. Catcher Adam Donachie followed with an RBI
double which plated Tucker for the third run of the inning to make the score 6-2.
Baysox reliever Fredy Deza came on in place of Livingston in the bottom of the seventh. The right-hander allowed one
hit, a home run to Aeros third baseman Jared Goedert, in 2.2 innings of work to earn his second hold of the season.

The Baysox got the run back in the top of the ninth, as Donachie lifted a sacrifice fly which plated Abreu for his second
RBI of the night. Left-hander Chad Thall came on in the ninth and allowed a run before closing the door, striking out two
while walking a batter in the final frame.

BLAME IT ON THE RAIN: BLUE CRABS AND REVOLUTION SCHEDULE DOUBLEHEADER
Southern Maryland & York Will Make Up Rained Out Game June 2 At Regency Furniture Stadium

Due to persistent rain showers from May 3 through 7, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and York Revolution were only

now four games.  On Tuesday, June 2 the teams will play a doubleheader, and both games will be seven innings long.
(Atlantic League rules for a doubleheader.)  Southern Maryland will be the home team for both games.

Game one of the doubleheader on June 2 will begin at 6:05 p.m., and the gates at Regency Furniture Stadium will open

MCLEOD'S JOURNEY FINALLY GETS HER TO D.C.

To say life has been somewhat of a roller coaster for goalkeeper Erin McLeod over the past year would be an
understatement.  Just over a month after suffering an ACL injury in the 2008 Olympic Games, McLeod received news
that she had been selected as a discovery player by the Washington Freedom, only to find herself forced to wait in
Canada for final approval for her visa. The waiting has finally ended, and on May 7 McLeod took the practice field for
the first time as a member of the Freedom.

SPORTS NOTES

The Preakness is Saturday and if I were a betting man the three horses I’d bet are “Mine that Bird”, “Papa Clem”, and
“Take the Points”.   It will be interesting to see how the filly Raschel Alexandra does running from the 13th post.  Two
other horses getting a lot of play are “Pioneer of the Nile” and “Friesan Fire”, oh well tune in at 6:15 pm on channels 4
and 11 for results.

In the Maryland State HS softball playoffs the results were:
2A       South Regional           `McDonough               2                      Hammond                   0
2A       South Regional           Gwynn Park                3                      North Point                 1
3A       South Regional           Northern                      10                    LaPlalta                       0
3A       South Regional           Huntingtown               13                    Great Mills                  3
4A       South Regional           Chesapeake                 11                    Thomas Stone             1

In the WCAC Championship Softball game O’Connell won its 6th straight title edging St. Mary’s Ryken 1-0.

The DC Divas will try and make it two in a row at home on May 23rd. the Divas won their home opener 27-7 against
Pittsburgh Passion before a nice crowd (at least one area team can beat a Pittsburgh team).  Divas QB Allyson Hamlin
led the win throwing two TD’s one to my favorite player, Donna Wilkinson and another to Nikki Williams.  Divas running
backs LaShawn Foust and Tiffany Mathews scored the other two TD’s.
